ODENSE – She came to speak to the people who run Denmark’s schools, and she spoke about the one thing that decides whether a school day feels good or hard: belonging. On Friday, October 30, Queen Mary joined the annual meeting of the School Leaders Association in Odense, where 2,800 school leaders had gathered, and as chair of the Mary Foundation she gave a speech on the importance of safe communities and on the Foundation’s work to combat bullying and loneliness and to strengthen wellbeing among children and young people.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
Consider the audience. Two thousand eight hundred school leaders amounts to the leadership of a nation’s school system in a single hall, and the Foundation chose that room deliberately: a conviction shared there on Friday is repeated in staff rooms and classrooms from Copenhagen to Jutland by Monday. The Mary Foundation’s method has always been this kind of leverage, working with the adults who shape children’s communities so that inclusion becomes the default and exclusion the exception.
The Queen in the Royal House photograph is all business warmth: a soft grey suit, a white blouse, arms folded in conversation, her emerald ring the one bright note. Readers who smiled yesterday at the Queen’s own signed film of her Border Collies in the autumn leaves saw the private register of this monarchy. Odense showed the public one, and the two sit easily together in a court that has learned to be both neighbour and institution, much like the young guests story from Oslo, where Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra received youth solidarity leaders at the palace.
What Mary argued is the Foundation’s founding idea, sharpened by years of school practice: bullying and loneliness are not separate problems, and neither is solved by focusing on one child alone. Strengthen the community, teach a class to include as a habit, and the ground that bullying needs simply disappears. Wellbeing, in this reading, is not a soft extra beside learning. It is the condition learning stands on, and school leaders are its architects.
The court’s post passed 3,400 likes within hours, proof that a working speech in Odense now travels like a state occasion. When those 2,800 leaders went home, they carried a royal instruction of the most practical kind: build communities where every child belongs, and much of the rest of education gets easier. Denmark’s Queen said it plainly, to exactly the people who can act on it.
ODENSE – Was fuer ein Auftritt!
