Five Ambassadors, One Morning: Grand Duke Guillaume Welcomes the World to His Palace

Five Ambassadors, One Morning: Grand Duke Guillaume Welcomes the World to His Palace

Five nations knocked on one door on Thursday morning, and Luxembourg opened it in full ceremonial style. On 29 October 2026, Grand Duke Guillaume received five new ambassadors in succession at the Grand Ducal Palace, each presenting a letter of credence and the letter of recall of a predecessor, in one of the oldest and most elegant rituals of state.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

A guest list that reads like an atlas

Greece sent Natalia-Maria Karageorgou. Botswana sent Zein Kebonang. Chile sent Jorge Carlos Tarud Daccarett. Ecuador sent Andrea Belen Gonzalez Nader. And Mexico sent Esteban Moctezuma Barragan. Europe, Africa, South America and North America, received one after another by the Grand Duke in a single morning, in the palace in the heart of Luxembourg City.

The photograph released by the Maison du Grand-Duc says everything about the tone. Guillaume stands tall in ceremonial olive uniform, a broad pale sash across his chest, red waist sash, white gloves and cap in hand, sabre at his side, greeting an ambassador in formal morning dress in the wood-panelled audience room. It is pageantry, yes, but pageantry with a job: the letter of credence, signed by a foreign head of state, is what turns an arriving diplomat into an accredited ambassador, and the letter of recall closes the previous mission with equal courtesy.

Three of the five envoys represent Spanish-speaking countries, Chile, Ecuador and Mexico, which gives the morning a distinctly transatlantic flavour, while Greece keeps the European thread and Botswana adds southern Africa to the palace diary. For the world’s only Grand Duchy, that is a remarkable reach for one Thursday. It follows a sparkling run of engagements in the first autumn of the reign, from Stephanie at the Steichen Awards at MUDAM to the couple opening the new National Archives at Belval and Maria Teresa shining at Paralympic Day at the Rehazenter. One court, many stages, and on Thursday the whole world came to call.

There is also a human detail hidden in the protocol. Every one of the five audiences followed the same pattern, the letter presented, the predecessor thanked in writing, the first conversation begun, yet no two of them were alike, because each ambassador brings a country, a language and a briefcase full of hopes into the room. A Greek envoy speaks for one of Europe’s oldest nations, a Botswanan envoy for one of Africa’s proudest success stories, and the three envoys from Santiago, Quito and Mexico City for a Spanish-speaking world that Luxembourg increasingly trades, studies and celebrates with. The Grand Duke’s job, five times over, was to make each of them feel that their letter was the only one of the morning. By every account of the court’s smooth running, he did.

Nachoder!
