What a night at MUDAM Luxembourg! On Tuesday the Grand Duchess, together with Culture Minister Eric Thill, took part in the presentation of the Edward Steichen Awards 2026 – and the official photograph says everything: Stephanie, radiant in a vivid green dress with feather earrings, smiling in the audience as two young artists heard the news that will change their careers.

The Edward Steichen Awards are presented every two years to young, rising talents from the European art scene. For this edition the juries honoured Nazanin Hafez with the Edward Steichen Award European Resident and Alexandra Uppmann with the Edward Steichen Luxembourg Resident in New York. With support from the stART-up fund of the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, both artists will soon take up residency places at the International Studio and Curatorial Program, ISCP, in New York – six months for one residency, four months for the other.
The court explains that the residencies will let the artists develop their work, meet other artists and grow their international network, all in the spirit of openness and exchange that shaped the career of Edward Steichen – the Luxembourg-born giant of photography who conquered America. Palace watchers have seen this family champion people all autumn, from Maria Teresa stealing hearts at Paralympic Day at the Rehazenter to Guillaume and Stephanie opening the National Archives at Belval – and on Tuesday it was the artists‘ turn to be put in the spotlight by a Grand Duchess who visibly enjoyed every minute.
That enjoyment matters. A prize backed by a foundation fund is valuable; a prize handed over in a glowing room, with a minister present and a Grand Duchess beaming from the front rows, is unforgettable – and for two artists heading to New York, unforgettable is a career asset all of its own.
Nachoder!
