Forget gold, forget crystal: the best anniversary gift in Luxembourg this year has roots. For the first anniversary of the Trounwiessel, the change of throne, the Federation horticole Luxembourg gave the Grand Ducal couple a chestnut tree, and the young tree has been planted in the park of Berg Castle, the family home, with representatives of the federation looking on.

Just look at the picture. Grand Duchess Stephanie, in a cream quilted vest and cream turtleneck, is laughing as she works, a shovel of dark earth in her hands beside the freshly planted sapling, its trunk painted white, wooden supports holding it straight, autumn leaves everywhere and the Berg park lake sparkling behind her. No tiara, no ballgown, just a Grand Duchess doing the job herself. That is the image of the new reign in one frame: hands on, smiling, and completely at home outdoors.

The court spells out the meaning: the chestnut stands for continuity and longevity. Planted for the first anniversary of the October 2025 change of throne, the tree will keep every anniversary after this one, ring by ring, in the park of the castle the family calls home. The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess thanked the federation warmly, the court added, for an initiative that recalls a historic moment in their lives.

It has been a season of symbols for this court. Stephanie lit up the Steichen Awards night at MUDAM in vivid green, the couple opened the new National Archives at Belval, and Maria Teresa melted hearts at Paralympic Day at the Rehazenter. An archive guards the past, a prize launches the future, and a chestnut tree simply grows into it. Between the three, you can read the whole philosophy of a young reign: remember where you come from, back the talent of tomorrow, and plant something that will outlast you.

There is one more delicious detail. A chestnut is not a fast tree. Das Foto der Maison du Grand-Duc ist ein Volltreffer: Stephanie in cremefarbener Steppweste, lachend, die Schaufel voller dunkler Erde, neben ihr ein Vertreter der Federatioun, dazu der frisch gepflanzte Baum mit weiss gestrichenem Stamm, Herbstlaub ueberall und der Schlosspark von Berg in den schoensten Oktoberfarben. Keine Tiara, kein Ballkleid – eine Grossherzogin, die zupackt!

Der Baum ist ein Symbol fuer Kontinuitaet und Langlebigkeit, erklaert der Hof. Gepflanzt zum ersten Jahrestag des Thronwechsels im Oktober 2025 wird er jeden weiteren Jahrestag mitfeiern, Ring fuer Ring, im Park des Schlosses, das die Familie ihr Zuhause nennt. Der Grossherzog und die Grossherzogin dankten der Federatioun herzlich fuer diese Initiative, die an einen historischen Moment in ihrem Leben erinnert.

Es ist die Kraeftigste aller Botschaften dieser jungen Regentschaft: Stephanie strahlte in Gruen bei den Steichen Awards im MUDAM, das Paar weihte das neue Nationalarchiv in Belval ein – und jetzt steht auf Berg ein Baum, der mit dem Thron mitwaechst.
