Stockholm did not expect to end its Sunday shouting at a television, but that is what happened. Andreas Almgren, a 31-year-old who had never raced a marathon in his life, won the TCS New York City Marathon in Central Park in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second – the first Swedish winner in the history of the race – and by the evening King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia had sent him a formal congratulation telegram, published by the Swedish Royal House.

The telegram is only a few lines long, and it says everything. Translated from the Swedish, the King and Queen wrote: „With your outstanding strength and endurance, you have in recent times run straight into the hearts of the Swedes. Your marathon performance in New York today was historic. We send our warmest congratulations on this feat.“ The message is signed CARL GUSTAF and SILVIA.
Debut marathons are meant to be survived. Almgren raced his like a championship final. He stayed with the leaders across the five boroughs, held his nerve as the Central Park hills began to bite, and then opened his stride in the final mile with the finishing speed of a lifetime on the track. Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa crossed second in 2:06:14, thirteen seconds behind. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho finished third in 2:06:26, one second ahead of the defending champion, Benson Kipruto of Kenya.
The history books will underline three facts. Almgren is the first Swede ever to win in New York. He is the first man to win the race on his marathon debut since Gebregziabher Gebremariam in 2010. And his time sits just over a minute outside the course record of 2:04:58 set by Tamirat Tola in 2023 – on a course famous for punishing exactly the kind of ambition Almgren showed. Nearly 60,000 runners took part this year. The fastest story among them belonged to a beginner.
The Royal House released the photograph with the telegram, and it is already the image of the weekend: Almgren standing tall on the Central Park finish line, his ALMGREN bib still in place, holding the Swedish flag stretched wide behind his shoulders, blue and yellow blazing in the autumn sun. Royal readers who enjoyed our recent coverage of Queen Mary at the Hubertus Hunt in Dyrehaven will spot the same thread – Scandinavian royal life at its warmest is always about shared national moments, and this was one of the biggest of the year. Our recent feature New York Is the Halloween Capital of the World showed the city in party mood; on Sunday it showed its sporting soul.
Almgren arrived in New York as a 2025 world bronze medallist over 10,000 metres, one of Europe’s most complete distance runners. He leaves it as a marathon champion at the first attempt. The King chose one word for that: historic. Four sentences, one telegram, and a whole country smiling – that is how Sweden ended its Sunday.
Seine Leistung in New York sei historisch.
Schweden sagt: Danke, Andreas!
