Three very different Spains filed through the same wood-panelled room on Tuesday morning, October 20, and King Felipe VI gave each of them his full attention. It was an audiences day at the Palacio de La Zarzuela in Madrid, the working palace from which the Spanish crown does its quiet, daily business, and the Royal Household shared the morning on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, in a carousel post that quickly passed 2,400 likes among the account’s 1.44 million followers.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The lead photograph sets the tone: the King seated, in a navy suit, striped shirt and burgundy dotted tie, papers resting in his lap, listening rather than speaking. There is no throne and no ceremony for its own sake. This is the monarchy at its desk, and the three audiences that followed read like a cross-section of the country the crown serves: a new foundation with an Atlantic horizon, a newspaper celebrating a decade of independent journalism, and the high-growth technology companies reshaping the Spanish economy.
The first audience of the day went to the Patronato, the board of trustees, of the newly constituted Fundacion Andalucia-America. The foundation has been created to promote the cultural, historical and economic links between Andalusia and the American continent, a relationship with five centuries of shared history behind it and, its founders believe, its best chapters still ahead. For the board, a reception at La Zarzuela at the very start of the foundation’s life is both an honour and a signal: the crown is watching, and the Atlantic project has royal encouragement from day one. It also continues a theme of the King’s autumn, coming just a day after he welcomed the mayors of the Ibero-American capitals to the same palace, as our report on the Ibero-American mayors‘ reception described.
Second through the door were representatives of El Independiente, the Spanish newspaper that is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its creation. A decade is a serious milestone for a digital-era newsroom, and a royal audience to mark it underlines something the Spanish crown has long understood: a healthy press is part of a healthy democracy, and anniversaries worth having are worth honouring in person. The King, himself a close reader of the country’s newspapers, received the delegation as one working institution greeting another.
The third audience brought the morning firmly into the future: representatives of the Plataforma EsTech, the platform created by Adigital, the Asociacion Espanola de la Economia Digital, which groups Spain’s high-growth technology companies. These are the scale-ups and digital champions whose growth rates are the envy of larger economies, and their presence at La Zarzuela shows how naturally the crown now moves between heritage and innovation. The same King who honoured writers in Barcelona last week, as our Premio Planeta report told it, spent Tuesday morning with the founders and executives building Spain’s digital economy.
That range is precisely the point of an audiences day. A foundation looking across the Atlantic, a newspaper looking back on ten years, and a tech platform looking forward: three Spains, one room, one host who listened to all of them. In the lead photograph the King holds his papers and pays attention, and in that simple posture lies the whole quiet argument for a working monarchy.
