Barcelona staged the literary night of the year on Thursday, October 15, and the Spanish crown took its seat at the head of the table. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia presided at Fira de Barcelona over the presentation of the Premio Planeta 2026, and the great prize of Spanish letters went to Isabel Allende for her novel La hora antes del Alba – The Hour Before Dawn. It was the 75th edition of an award presented every October 15 since 1952, and the official photograph is pure joy: the King applauding on one side of the winner, the Queen applauding on the other, and Allende between them, holding the silver Planeta trophy in both hands.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Royal Household shared the evening on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, in a carousel posted at 14:33 UTC, and within hours the post had drawn more than 4,700 likes and close to 90 comments from the Household’s 1.44 million followers. There was warm praise, too, for the finalist, Sergio Hernandez Carrasco, author of La anoranza, whose runner-up placing carries the prize’s second award of 200,000 euros.
The data point that defines the Planeta is simple: the winner receives 1,000,000 euros, which makes it the most valuable literary award in the world for a single novel. It was created in 1952 by Jose Manuel Lara Hernandez, founder of the Planeta publishing house, and it is always awarded on October 15, St Teresa’s day – Teresa being the name of Lara’s wife. The King drew that thread in his speech, recalling that every October 15 the prize has made room for a plurality of voices, honoured established literary careers and helped discover new authors. Their books, he noted in essence, tell very different stories, yet share one power: they wake emotions, raise questions and widen the reader’s view of the world.
For the line of the night, the King reached back to Ana Maria Matute, who won the Planeta in 1954, and her famous motto: he who does not invent, does not live. The freedom to imagine other lives, he went on in essence, lets readers recognise themselves in experiences not their own, approach realities different from theirs, and find in that diversity both what unites people and what makes them different. It was a speech that understood its winner perfectly, because Isabel Allende has spent a lifetime doing exactly that.
Allende, born in Chile, is one of the most widely read Spanish-language authors on earth. The House of the Spirits introduced her to a global audience in 1982, and the novels that followed carried her readers across continents, generations and family histories, in translation after translation. To see her at Fira de Barcelona, white-haired and radiant in a sheer floral-embroidered tunic, holding a globe-shaped trophy while a King and Queen applauded her, was to watch Spanish-language literature honour one of its living monuments.
The gala also crowned a remarkable cultural day. That morning the King had chaired the Poblet monastery trustees in Tarragona, the visit we reported in our report on King Felipe’s return to Poblet, and earlier in the week the couple had filled classrooms in Ceuta and Melilla, where Queen Letizia sat at a pupil’s desk in Melilla. Schools, cloisters and now a book prize: this royal autumn belongs to culture, and Thursday night in Barcelona was its brightest evening.
