A palace, a tapestry and the men and women who run some of the biggest cities on earth: on Monday afternoon, October 19, King Felipe VI received at the Palacio de La Zarzuela in Madrid the mayors who will take part in the second Encuentro de Ciudades Iberoamericanas, the meeting of Ibero-American cities organised by the Union de Ciudades Capitales Iberoamericanas (UCCI) and the Secretaria General Iberoamericana (SEGIB).
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Royal Household shared the reception on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, and the lead photograph is a classic: the King at the centre of the front row in a grey suit, white shirt and blue dotted tie, the mayors arranged around him on the steps, a vast historic tapestry covering the wall behind the group. The post passed 4,100 likes within hours among the account’s 1.44 million followers.
The date is the story. The cities encounter is the official prelude to the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which Madrid hosts on November 4 and 5, barely sixteen days later. So the palace welcomed the city leaders first: the officials who run the streets, the transport and the housing of the Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking world, ahead of the heads of state and government who will follow them to the same city. Alongside the mayors, the encounter will bring together representatives of international organisations, the private sector and civil society, all of them working on one theme, urban development.
That this is already the second edition matters. A first meeting is an idea; a second is a fixture. And the King’s decision to receive the participants at his own residence gives the fixture weight, much as his presence has anchored the Spanish crown’s remarkable cultural autumn, from his return to Poblet monastery in Tarragona to the Barcelona night when, as our Planeta report told it, he and Queen Letizia honoured Isabel Allende. Monastery, book prize, school visits in Ceuta and Melilla, and now a palace full of mayors: the diary of this crown keeps returning to the places where a country’s shared life is actually built.
There is no throne in Monday’s photograph, and that is the point. Just a head of state in a grey suit, standing shoulder to shoulder with elected mayors in front of a tapestry, in the working palace from which Spain receives the world. Sixteen days from now the presidents arrive. The mayors, thanks to their host, have already had the best photograph of the summit season.

November in Madrid steigt – in gerade einmal sechzehn Tagen!
