Pope Leo XIV said it on Wednesday, 4 November, at the General Audience – and the photo on his official @pontifex Instagram account shows exactly how he meant it: seated in bright light, smiling broadly, glasses on, holding the pages of his address with both hands, a microphone right in front of him. A Pope who looks like he genuinely enjoys teaching. Close to 7,000 likes in the first hours, more than 100 comments, and an audience of about 14.5 million followers for a lesson most people will carry straight into their working week.

His words, in the caption published in Portuguese, Spanish and French among its versions, are wonderfully concrete. Through work, a person develops as a person, provides for the family, expresses their own talent, takes part in social life and builds a better world, collaborating in the creative work of God. Work must never be distorted against people, the common good or creation. The true challenge: offer everyone opportunities to make their capacities bear fruit. Unemployment, exploitation and conditions that endanger health and life are not acceptable. And workers have the right and the duty to join in decisions about their own activity, also together in associations, meeting conflict with dialogue and nonviolent action.

Read that list again slowly, because it is a whole philosophy of daily life in five beats: grow, provide, shine, belong, build. The opportunity sentence is aimed at everyone who hires, teaches, trains or manages – and the participation sentence is aimed at everyone who works: your voice in decisions about your own work is not a gift, it is a right and even a duty, and conflicts belong at a table, handled with dialogue. Strong, clear, and completely free of scolding. Leo XIV does not talk down to working people. He talks their daily effort up – to the level of creation itself.

November, bei der Generalaudienz, geteilt als Video auf seinem offiziellen Instagram-Konto @pontifex fuer rund 14,5 Millionen Follower. Das Foto dazu: der Papst sitzend, laechelnd, Brille auf der Nase, die Blaetter seiner Ansprache in beiden Haenden, ein Mikrofon vor sich. Ein Lehrer, der sein Thema liebt!

Durch die Arbeit, so der Papst in der Bildunterschrift, entfaltet sich der Mensch als Person, sorgt fuer seine Familie, bringt sein Talent zum Ausdruck, nimmt am gesellschaftlichen Leben teil und baut eine bessere Welt – als Mitarbeiter an Gottes Schoepfungswerk. Arbeit darf niemals zum Schaden der Menschen, des Gemeinwohls oder der Schoepfung verfaelscht werden. Die wahre Herausforderung: allen Menschen Chancen geben, ihre Faehigkeiten Frucht bringen zu lassen. Arbeitslosigkeit, Ausbeutung und Arbeitsbedingungen, die Gesundheit und Leben gefaehrden, sind nicht akzeptabel. Und Arbeitnehmer haben das Recht und die Pflicht, an Entscheidungen ueber ihre eigene Taetigkeit mitzuwirken, auch gemeinschaftlich, und Konflikte mit Dialog und gewaltfreien Aktionen zu loesen.

Fuünf starke Worte in einem Absatz: wachsen, sorgen, glaenzen, dazugehoeren, bauen. Leo XIV. redet die arbeitenden Menschen nicht klein – er redet ihre taegliche Leistung gross, bis hinauf zur Schoepfung selbst. Wer morgen frueh zur Arbeit geht, geht nach diesem Mittwoch als Herz der Wirtschaft. Das ist doch mal eine Schlagzeile, die man sich an den Kuehlschrank haengen kann!
