The medals were handed over on Tuesday. On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako did the thing that turns an honor into a memory: they invited Japan’s newly decorated culture bearers to tea at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, and they brought the whole family with them.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Imperial Household Agency published the pictures on its official Instagram account @kunaicho_jp. Their Majesties hosted the tea party in the palace’s Rensui hall for the recipients of the Order of Culture and the Persons of Cultural Merit, the scholars, artists and thinkers Japan had honored one day earlier for Culture Day, November 3, when the Emperor personally presented the Order at the palace. Joining them on Wednesday were Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Aiko and Princess Kako.
The lead photograph says everything. Naruhito in morning dress, Masako glowing in a long cream outfit with pearls, Akishino and Kiko behind them, Aiko in cream, Kako in deep teal – six royals walking into a room of round tables, pale screens and a bright yellow-green carpet, while chamberlains in court dress line the wall. The Agency’s post passed 22,800 likes within hours, on an account with about 2.51 million followers.
Why does a tea party deserve a headline? Because this is the second half of Japan’s highest cultural honor, and the warmer one. Medals are presented. Tea is shared. The recipients, many of them elderly, many of them people who worked for decades far from any spotlight, are thanked in person by three generations of the imperial house at once. Readers who follow our palace coverage will also enjoy the Mackage night on Madison Avenue and the story of Grandmother Feodora.
On Tuesday the Emperor gave Japan’s culture a medal. On Wednesday he gave it an afternoon. That is not ceremony. That is manners, at the very top.
