Madrid’s summit found its closing words on Thursday. King Felipe VI presided over the plenary session of the XXX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government at the Gallery of the Royal Collections, where the pro tempore secretariat of the summits passed to the Republic of Honduras, host of the next edition in 2028 – and the King ended his address with a chairman’s verdict: I close with my most sincere congratulations, we have worked well for Ibero-America and we have given a valuable example in a complex time.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Royal Household, @casareal.es, illustrated the closing with the summit family photograph: two dozen leaders in two rows beneath the giant orange and red 30 emblem and the bilingual backdrop, Cumbre – Cimeira Iberoamericana, the King in the front row in a dark suit and blue dotted tie, near the centre of the line. The report passed 2,300 likes within hours among the Household’s 1.46 million followers. Thursday’s arc ran from charge to verdict: the session had opened with the citizens-first address retold in the plenary among the Royal Collections, and it closed with the King instructing the room that the agreements must now take flight and become tangible realities, with the help of the Ibero-American General Secretariat. The closing collected a week that began with the mirror of Ibero-America speech at the Teatro Real, was opened in style when the Kings launched the summit at the Teatro Real, and promised one card for 90 million people along the way.
There is an art to ending a summit well, and it is mostly about the handover. A community that began its meetings in 1991, and has now completed thirty editions in thirty-five years, keeps itself alive by passing its stewardship from capital to capital – and on Thursday the baton travelled to Honduras, which will welcome the leaders in 2028. The King, who opened the week as its host and poet, closed it as its examiner: congratulations first, then the assignment, agreements on paper are only a beginning. It is a fitting final image for Madrid’s summit – a family photograph on the surface, and underneath it a relay race, already running toward Central America.
