DAKAR – What a scene! No throne room, no red carpet rolled out in a palace – just sunshine, sand and the Olympic rings. Prince Albert II of Monaco has travelled to Senegal, and the Prince’s Palace published the pictures on Monday, November 2, 2026. The Sovereign took part in the Dakar 2026 summit, under the motto „Sport and Development – from Olympic momentum to a lasting legacy“ – and then he went out to look at the venues themselves.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
Look at the photograph closely. Albert wears the navy shirt of the Monegasque team with the principality’s crest, a white cap with the Olympic rings and sunglasses. Beside him stands a young athlete in matching colours, her accreditation full of traded pins, holding her cap and beaming. Next to them, hosts in Dakar 2026 blue. This is not a state portrait. This is a team photo, and the Prince is simply one of the team.

He earned that place. Albert is a member of the International Olympic Committee and President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee – and before he was a sovereign, he was an athlete himself, a bobsledder at five Winter Games. When a man like that tours a training venue, he is not being polite. He knows what a young athlete needs, because he once needed it himself.
And there was plenty to tour. The palace names the stops: sports infrastructure at Diamniadio, at the DEX and at the Iba Mar Diop complex. Modernized or built in the framework of the Games, the facilities are meant to host international competitions – and to train the young generations of Senegal, week after week, long after the big event. That, says the palace, is the deeper chance of Dakar 2026: grassroots sport, local talent on show, and a country standing taller in the world.
It is the third young face of this African journey. In Antananarivo, Albert met the children of Sandratra. In Yaounde, he knelt among the children of the Centre Edimar Princesse Grace. Now Dakar adds sport to the story – and sport, as any parent on any touchline knows, is where confidence is built first.
One stop on the tour deserves a second look. Diamniadio is not a tired stadium district getting a coat of paint; it is a new city, planned from the ground up, with sport written into the plan from the start. Games history is full of venues bolted onto finished cities and left to gather dust. Diamniadio offers the rarer version: training halls, schools and homes growing up side by side, so that the legacy is not a building at all, but a daily routine. A youngster there will not travel to sport. Sport will simply be where she lives.
The palace calls it a lasting legacy in the service of youth and future generations. Strip away the fine words and one simple truth remains: halls that stay open make champions. Dakar is building the halls. Albert came to see them with his own eyes.
And spare a thought for the young woman in the team photograph, the one with the pins. Every Games produces thousands like her – volunteers, young officials, junior athletes – and every Games quietly depends on them. The pins on her accreditation are the sport’s oldest currency, traded hand to hand between strangers who leave as friends. If Dakar 2026 works, it will be because a whole generation of Senegalese youngsters got to stand exactly where she is standing: inside the event, not outside the fence, learning how the big days are made.
Daneben Gastgeber in Dakar-Blau.
