Melilla saved its most charming hour for the classroom. On October 14, after King Felipe VI had received the Key to the City that morning, the King and Queen Letizia visited the CEIP Pintor Eduardo Morillas, an Infant and Primary school in the La Victoria neighbourhood that is firmly committed to inclusion, educational innovation and the integral formation of its pupils, where they held a meeting with the educational community and stepped into Infant and Primary classrooms.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The Royal Household shared the visit on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, in a carousel at 10:47 and a reel at 14:08. The lead photograph is unforgettable: Queen Letizia, in a pale pink pleated blouse with rolled sleeves and loose hair, sits at a classroom desk talking with pupils, their colourful artwork and crayons spread before her, a bright pink backpack and a small Spanish flag in the foreground. King Felipe stands behind her in a grey pinstripe suit and blue patterned tie, and on the blackboard behind them a child has chalked „Don Felipe VI y Dona Letizia“ and „Espana“ under a little flag, with the pupils‘ art pinned all around.

The Guau moment

The reel holds the second everyone replayed. The King holds up a pupil’s drawing, and the Queen, seated at the desk, exclaims „Guau!“ – wow. It is spontaneous, delighted and impossible to stage, and it captures exactly what this school is about: children at the centre, adults paying attention. The response matched it – about 11,748 likes and 132 comments for the carousel, about 11,163 likes and 179 comments for the reel, from about 1,437,837 followers.

Context lifts the visit from lovely to significant. This was the second school in two days: on October 13 the couple visited the CEIP Vicente Aleixandre in Ceuta and its 140-plus pupils aged 3 to 12, on the same Mediterranean tour that began with the palace morning we reported in our Melilla report on the flags and the second key in two days and continued from our Ceuta report on the first key and the little fan. Two cities, two keys, two schools. A monarchy that spends its tour at classroom desks is telling the country what it values, and Pintor Eduardo Morillas, with its creed of inclusion and innovation, was the perfect stage for that message.

Teachers will note what the Household chose to emphasise: not the visit as ceremony, but the school as a working community – its commitment to inclusion, to new teaching ideas and to forming whole, confident children. The King and Queen gave that community their full attention, classroom by classroom, and a few hundred pupils in La Victoria gained a memory they will retell for the rest of their lives.

– also Wow!
