Most people hurry through Luxembourg’s station district with their eyes on a timetable. Grand Duchess Stephanie went there on Wednesday for a very different reason: to visit the dropIn, the small, remarkable Red Cross service that has offered sex workers a safe and judgment-free welcome since 1998, and to meet the team whose work usually stays far away from the cameras.

The dropIn is the medico-psycho-social service of the Luxembourg Red Cross, based at Luxembourg-Gare. Its promise has not changed since the day it launched in 1998: anonymity is respected, nobody is judged, and everyone who walks in is received in a safe and trusted environment. Twenty-eight years on, that promise is still being kept, every day, a short walk from the station platforms.
The Grand Duchess is exactly the right visitor for such a place. She is President of the Luxembourg Red Cross, and this was her presidency at ground level. This site recently showed the Grand Duchess welcoming the Red Cross’s new leader to Berg Palace, and Wednesday’s visit completed the picture: headquarters one day, front line the next.
What does the service actually offer? Everything is free. There is social and legal support, medical consultations, and a rest room at the heart of the building where visitors can simply rest in safety. The goals are to protect health and to push back against social exclusion. And through the programme called EXIT, the dropIn helps people who want to leave sex work to start a new life, with real, sustained support rather than a leaflet and good wishes.
The work does not stop at the gate. The dropIn’s teams go out onto the streets, carrying out prevention awareness work and letting people know the service exists. That outreach matters, because the people who most need an anonymous, welcoming service are the least likely to find it on their own.
The official photograph captures the spirit of the day beautifully. The Grand Duchess, in a blue suit with a white top and a small dark clutch, stands right in the middle of nine members of the team in front of the white gates of the service, its red umbrella sign visible behind them. It could be a family photo. In the nicest sense, that is what it looks like: a president standing proudly with her team.
Luxembourg’s royal autumn has had its glamorous chapters, including the Grand Duke hosting the World Scout Foundation board at the palace. Wednesday added a chapter of a different kind, and a deeply impressive one. And only last week readers followed the Grand Duchess in Esch, standing up for families at Fondation Pro Familia. The line through all of it is the same: this court goes to where people actually live, and it treats everyone it meets there with the same respect.
There is also a quiet lesson in the choice of location. Station districts in every European capital are where a city shows its hardest edges: people in transit, people in difficulty, people the rest of the city would rather not think about. Luxembourg placed its dropIn exactly there, on purpose, where it is needed most, and has kept it there for 28 years. A royal visit to that address does not just honour a team. It tells the whole city that its hardest edges are still part of the national story, and still worthy of attention from the very top. That is a message no speech could deliver as clearly as a Wednesday visit, a white gate and a team photograph.
