Melilla gave King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia a welcome full of sunshine and flags on the morning of October 14, as the Spanish royal couple began an official visit to the Autonomous City at the Palacio de la Asamblea, greeted by the city’s principal authorities and by a crowd that had turned out in force to see them.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Royal Household shared the visit on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, in two posts. A reel at 06:16 showed the Queen working a joyful crowd line, and a carousel at 06:36 showed the formal welcome at the Assembly Palace, the greeting to the Government Council and the programme that followed.
One photograph says everything. Queen Letizia, in a pale pink pleated blouse and black wide trousers with her long hair loose, leans into the crowd with both arms open, laughing, while hands reach out and Spanish flags wave around her. Behind her, King Felipe, in a grey pinstripe suit, smiles broadly. A child waves a small flag beside a Melilla banner with its coat of arms, palm trees rise in the bright light, and the whole frame feels like a city hugging its King and Queen.
Inside the palace, the couple greeted the members of the Consejo de Gobierno and held a working meeting with representatives of Melillan society. Then came the highlight – the King received the Key to the City of Melilla. It was his second key in two days, after Ceuta gave him theirs on October 13, a double honour no city hands out lightly. Readers who loved that first morning can revisit our Ceuta report with the little fan and the first key.
The Household said the couple used the visit to convey the support of the Crown to the institutions of Melilla and to Melillan society. The response online matched the street – about 6,667 likes for the reel and 4,632 for the carousel by report time, on an account with more than 1.43 million followers. It was the same warmth we saw in Stockholm this week in our report on Queen Silvia and the Global Child Forum, where a palace day was spent, as here, on people first.
