MONACO – A crystal chandelier, a room full of gold, and two writers at the very center of it all. On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Prince Albert II and Princess Caroline of Hanover, accompanied by Charlotte Casiraghi, welcomed the laureates of the Prince Pierre Foundation Prizes to the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, and the Principality’s most beautiful salon belonged, for one afternoon, to literature.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The Literary Prize went to Daniel Pennac, honored for the whole of his body of work. Few living authors are as genuinely loved as Pennac, whose novels have been read, taught, lent and loved across the French-speaking world for decades. In the official palace photograph he stands smiling in his round glasses, his medal in its open case in his hands, a writer being thanked by a prince, a princess and her daughter in person. Beside him, the Discovery Grant, the Bourse de la Découverte, went to Soundouss Chraïbi for her very first novel, Le soleil se lève deux fois, The Sun Rises Twice. A lifetime of writing and a first book, honored in the same room on the same afternoon: that pairing is the Prince Pierre philosophy in a single picture.

The hosts gave the afternoon its unmistakable Monegasque shine. Prince Albert II, in a classic navy suit, stood at the center of the group. Princess Caroline, radiant in a bright scarlet jacket, brought the cultural authority she has carried in the Principality for decades. Charlotte Casiraghi, elegant in a cream-white double-breasted suit, represented the family’s younger, book-loving generation. Behind them, in Michaël Alesi’s photograph, the full-length portrait of Princess Grace in white looks over the laureates, a reminder that this palace has welcomed artists as honored guests for generations.

The palace, through its official account @palaisprincierdemonaco, said the distinctions honor the richness of literary creation and support the authors whose works keep contemporary literature alive. Readers clearly agreed: the post gathered close to a thousand likes within its first hours. It has been a week of gathering and giving in the Principality, in the same spirit as an autumn evening in the Hamptons where film, wine and generosity shared one table, and with the same belief that culture deserves a palace: the belief that also drives the season’s royal coverage, from royal visits celebrated with open arms and a sea of flags to a Wednesday afternoon spent, quite simply, with books.

For Pennac, Monaco’s medal is a personal kind of honor, delivered face to face in a golden room. For Chraïbi, the Discovery Grant is a public vote of confidence at the very start of a career, attached to a first novel whose title suddenly sounds like a promise. The sun rises twice, indeed: once for the legend, and once for the discovery.
