Ceuta rolled out its warmest welcome on the morning of October 13, and King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia answered it in kind. The Spanish royal couple began an official visit to the Autonomous City of Ceuta at the doors of the Palacio Autonomico, greeted first by the people of the city in bright sunshine, then by its authorities inside the palace, in a morning that mixed handshakes, laughter, a working meeting and one very special key.
The Royal Household shared the visit on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, in two posts. A reel posted at 06:31 showed the King and Queen being received by the people of Ceuta at the doors of the Palacio Autonomico, where the official visit began. A carousel at 07:34 showed the formal side of the same morning – the city’s authorities receiving the royal couple on their arrival at the palace, the greeting to the corporation, and the programme that followed.
One photograph from the carousel says more than any official summary. Queen Letizia, in a textured blue-grey jacket with her long hair loose, has crouched down to a small girl perched on a stone post – pink glasses, a floral top, red socks – and holds the child’s face gently in both hands, smiling straight into her eyes. Behind her, King Felipe, in a dark navy suit and patterned blue tie, is laughing with delight. All around them, hands reach out, phones rise and Spanish flags wave against the pale stone of the street.
Outside the palace, the Queen worked the crowd line with both hands outstretched, waving to balconies and chatting with well-wishers, while the King followed close behind, beaming. It was a walkabout in the best sense of the word, and it set the tone for everything that followed. Readers who followed the Household’s moving message on the eve of National Day in our report on Spain’s royal unity message will recognise the same thread – a Crown that speaks first to people’s hearts.
Inside the Palacio Autonomico, the morning turned official. The King and Queen greeted the corporation, the city’s governing body, and held a working meeting with representatives of Ceuta society. Then came the ceremonial highlight: the King received the Key to the City, the honour with which a city tells a treasured guest that its doors stand open to him.
The timing gave the visit extra shine. It came the day after October 12, Spain’s National Day, which the couple had spent in Madrid with Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, welcoming society to the Royal Palace. From the capital’s grand reception to Ceuta’s sunny streets in under a day – the message was unmistakable, and the public response matched it. By check time, the crowd reel had drawn about 14,537 likes and 368 comments, the palace carousel about 2,734 likes, on an account with 1,431,146 followers.
Ceuta asked for a royal visit and received a royal morning: flags, sunshine, a key given in friendship, and a Queen at eye level with the city’s youngest fan. It is the sort of day that strengthens the bond between a city and its King and Queen for years to come, much like the heartfelt royal engagements we covered in our Luxembourg royal report, where personal warmth mattered more than protocol.
