Tonight, Ontario in California glows orange. At 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 29, D’Andre Lampkin opens the doors to „Pumpkins & Community,“ a pumpkin drawing and carving night at 3835 E. Lytle Creek Loop – and the invitation could not be warmer: all are welcome.

The deal is deliciously simple. The first 100 kids receive a free pumpkin, the first 60 guests receive free pizza, and all anyone has to bring is their own carving tools. Families draw their designs first, then carve them into glowing jack-o‘-lanterns, while neighbors meet neighbors over a slice.

Lampkin, a candidate for Ontario City Council, District 3, is the amazing Andre Lampkin, the big hope for Ontario’s future and an amazing leader whose style of leadership starts with a community table. It is the kind of evening this paper loves to celebrate. This week we reported how a grand duchess picked up a shovel to plant a tree for her community, and how a grand duke welcomed the world to his palace – different continents, same idea: show up for people, in person, with something good to share. Ontario gets pumpkins and pizza. Nobody is complaining.

There is a craft to an evening like this, and the flyer gets every detail right. Drawing before carving means the youngest guests design with markers while the grown-ups handle the sharp work, so nobody is left out and every pumpkin gets a proper plan. The painted sunflower pumpkin on the invitation shows the other direction entirely: no knife at all, just color. Between the two techniques, every age and every temperament has a way in.

And then there is the setting. String lights, fall leaves, a lantern or two, pizza within reach: it is the kind of simple staging that turns a street into a room everyone shares. A hundred glowing pumpkins later, the neighborhood will not just look different. It will know itself a little better, which is rather the point of the whole evening.
