Costumes from Det Ny Teater’s production of My Fair Lady closed the show on Tuesday evening at Laugenes Opvisning, the Guilds‘ Show in Moltkes Palae in Copenhagen, where Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte watched creations and work from a range of specialized craft trades.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

Actors from the production walked the catwalk in costume, among them Tommy Kenter, who plays the dustman Alfred P. Doolittle. Before the finale, tailors, furriers, goldsmiths, milliners, saddlers, upholsterers and hairdressers had each presented their work. The official photograph shows the Princess beaming in a magenta dress with a double strand of pearls and a rose bouquet in her hands.

Danish craft guilds have gathered for this showcase since 2010, to put the spotlight on the classic trades and inspire a new generation to carry the traditions forward. Sixteen years of shows have turned a simple idea into a fixture of the Copenhagen autumn: seven named trades, one palace, one royal guest, and work that speaks entirely for itself. Readers who enjoyed Queen Margrethe honoring Greenland journalism at Fredensborg and the Hubertus Hunt results in Dyrehaven will recognize the pattern – the Danish court spending its autumn putting its name behind other people’s skill.

The finale was the evening’s smartest stroke. A My Fair Lady costume is tailoring, millinery, fur work and hairdressing combined, so the catwalk sent every trade the audience had just admired back down the runway at once, worn by characters. And the musical itself tells a story of transformation through training, which is exactly what an apprenticeship is. Princess Benedikte, in that unforgettable magenta, was the perfect royal witness: a patron who understands that a handmade seam is not nostalgia. It is a profession with a future, provided evenings like this one keep filling the benches with new hands.

Schneider, Goldschmiede, ein Muellmann – Prinzessin Benedikte feiert Dänemarks Handwerk im Moltke-Palais

Was fuer ein Abend in Kopenhagen!

One more detail from the evening deserves a place in the record. The little girl at the edge of the official photograph, in her white top and floral skirt, is not a posed extra – she is simply a guest who wandered into the frame at the right second. Editors usually crop such accidents out. Keeping her in was the better instinct, because she is the whole argument of Laugenes Opvisning in one small figure: a child looking at skilled work, and at a princess admiring it, and deciding that this is a world worth joining.
