King Felipe VI opened the first full day of Madrid’s Ibero-American Summit on Wednesday, November 4, by honouring the people who build the region’s economy, presenting the eleventh and twelfth editions of the Enrique V. Iglesias Prize for the Development of the Ibero-American Business Space to Guatemalan businessman Dionisio Gutierrez, president of the Fundacion Libertad y Desarrollo, and Brazilian banker Andre Esteves, chairman of BTG Pactual.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Royal Household, @casareal.es, shared a joyful double picture. Above, the King stands at the centre of a long line of laureates and guests on a polished herringbone floor, the CEAPI backdrop behind them, the two winners proudly holding their awards. Below, the ceremony loosens into conversation, the King laughing with the winners‘ circle. The prize is granted by CEAPI, the Business Council Alliance for Ibero-America, and it rewards exactly what the photographs show: long business trajectories, a contribution to economic development and productive investment, and the strengthening of the business space that links the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world.
The pairing of the laureates is a summit in miniature. Gutierrez brings Central America and the patient institution building of his foundation work. Esteves brings Brazil and the firepower of one of the region’s leading investment banks. Between them stands a king whose own week has been a tour of everything Ibero-America values: poetry, when five hundred years of Camoes brought Felipe VI and Portugal’s president to the National Library; diplomacy, in a handshake before the summit with Chile’s President Kast and in three presidents before lunch at the Royal Palace; and stagecraft, when the Gallery of the Royal Collections stood ready for the summit. On Wednesday, business took its turn in the royal diary, and it looked entirely at home there.

There is a reason this prize, of all the summit week’s honours, carries a personal name. Enrique V. Iglesias spent a lifetime arguing that Ibero-America is one economic and cultural space, and the award that bears his name is judged by whether its holders have actually built that space – with companies, foundations, investment and patience. On the evidence of Wednesday’s photograph, two more builders have joined the roll, and the King made sure the whole region saw them do it.
