On 20 April in Luanda, Angola, Pope Leo XIV got flowers from a child and gave the world a sentence in return. On a red carpet, in red vestments, the Pope bent down to a young boy with glasses and a yellow scarf who was holding out a bouquet with both hands, while a girl stood beside him and a bishop in magenta watched over the scene. The message on the official @pontifex reel, liked 66,416 times and commented on 1,103 times, could hardly be clearer: do not be afraid to say yes to Christ. Do not be afraid of tomorrow, for you belong completely to the Lord.

And then comes the sentence that makes this more than a nice photograph. He takes nothing away, the Pope tells young people considering a vocation lived in obedience, poverty and celibacy. The only thing he takes is sin, and he takes it upon himself. Everything else is gift: the land and the family you were born into, Baptism and the great family of the Church, and your vocation itself. Readers who loved our story on the Shepherd who gives life in abundance will hear the same joyful note here, and anyone who saw the open Bible in the full stadium knows how this Pope turns one scene into a message for millions. In Luanda, the children went first, the Pope bent down, and the invitation went out in four languages at once.
There is also a lesson here about timing. The message was not saved for a congress or a synod. It was spoken where young people actually were, in the open air, with music, colour and noise all around, and it trusted them with a serious idea in a joyful place. That trust is the real headline, and the flowers are its perfect symbol.
