Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Felipe and Letizia Go Back to School in Ceuta – a Giant Red Book, Tiny Pupils and a Royal Reading Lesson

Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Felipe and Letizia Go Back to School in Ceuta – a Giant Red Book, Tiny Pupils and a Royal Reading Lesson

Ceuta saved its sweetest welcome for the afternoon. On October 13, after a morning of crowds, flags and the Key to the City, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia continued their official visit in the Manzanera neighbourhood, where the CEIP Vicente Aleixandre public school opened its doors to them – and more than 140 pupils between the ages of 3 and 12 gave their King and Queen a school day nobody will forget.

The Royal Household shared the visit on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, in a carousel at 10:45 and a reel at 13:13. First, the couple greeted the neighbours who had gathered near the school. Then the tour began: several early years and primary classrooms, a meeting with the educational community, and a close look at the programmes that make this small neighbourhood school so special, including the close accompaniment it gives every single pupil.

The giant red book of Vicente Aleixandre

One photograph from the carousel is already a classic. The King, in a dark navy suit and patterned blue tie, and the Queen, in her textured blue-grey jacket, are leaning with a teacher over an enormous red book on a wooden stand. Its cover reads „La Constitucion de Nuestro Cole“ – the Constitution of Our School – and the cartoon children on it hold up its message: our rights, and our duties. The book was made by the school community itself, and the royal couple turn its pages with complete seriousness. A constitution written by children, read by a King – Ceuta could not have scripted it better.

In an early childhood classroom, the King and Queen greeted children of 4 and 5, who learn in a multicultural environment built on respect for different backgrounds. In a third-year primary classroom, they discovered MUS-E, the programme that combines the arts with everyday teaching. It was education, Ceuta style: warm, colourful and proud, and it followed naturally from the morning’s unforgettable crowd welcome in Ceuta, when a little girl in pink glasses first stole the Queen’s heart.

Why this school visit matters

School visits are the quiet giants of the royal diary. No gala, no balcony, just teachers doing remarkable daily work and children who will remember the day for the rest of their lives. The public response said everything: about 16,800 likes and 285 comments for the school reel, about 7,100 likes for the carousel, on an account followed by more than 1.43 million people. A neighbourhood school in Ceuta outperformed most red carpets.

There was a European echo the very same day, when another royal couple devoted their afternoon to their country’s youngest residents, as we reported in our story on the new Creche Ida nursery in Monaco. In Monaco, a new nursery. In Ceuta, a giant red book. Both visits carried the same message: the youngest come first.

Ceuta began its royal day with a key and crowned it with a storybook. The pupils of Vicente Aleixandre hosted a King and Queen in their own classrooms – and passed with flying colours.

There is a detail in the visit that teachers across Spain will appreciate most. The Household’s account did not treat the school as a backdrop. It named the neighbourhood, counted the pupils, explained the multicultural character of the classrooms and singled out the support the staff give to children and their families. That is the kind of precise, generous reporting that turns a royal photo opportunity into a public thank-you for a whole profession. The teachers of Vicente Aleixandre, who prepared their pupils, their classrooms and one magnificent red book for the most scrutinised school day of the year, earned every word of it – and the smiles in every photograph show the King and Queen knew it.
