Leonor Presents the Insignia: Messi, Patti Smith and Julian Barnes Open Awards Day in Oviedo

Oviedo began the biggest day of its year in a hotel ballroom on Friday morning, October 23, as King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, with Princess Leonor, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofia, held the traditional audiences that open the day of the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony at the Hotel de la Reconquista.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The Royal Household shared the morning on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, and its group photograph is already the picture of awards week: Princess Leonor at the centre in a striking pink trouser suit, flanked by the laureates of 2026, with Leo Messi in the back row and Patti Smith, silver-haired in black, at the front right. The post passed 10,800 likes within hours among the account’s 1.44 million followers.

Students first, stars second

The morning’s order charmed everyone who follows these awards. First, in the Salon de los Consejos, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia received the winners of the Premios Fin de Grado 2025 of the University of Oviedo, the region’s best new graduates. Then the King and Queen received the recipients of the Medallas de Asturias and the Hijos Predilectos and Hijos Adoptivos of 2026. Only then, in the Salon Covadonga, did the Princess greet this year’s laureates and present them with the insignia of the Fundacion Princesa de Asturias, ahead of tonight’s ceremony at the Teatro Campoamor, which begins at 6.30 p.m.

The roll call is astonishing in its range: Patti Smith for the Arts, Julian Barnes for Literature, Timothy Garton Ash for the Social Sciences, Studio Ghibli for Communication and Humanities, David Klenerman, Shankar Balasubramanian and Pascal Mayer for Scientific and Technical Research, Leo Messi for Sports, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault for International Cooperation and astronaut Christina Koch for Concord. A punk poet, a footballer, an animation studio and a seed vault in one photograph, with a princess in pink at its centre – no other European awards week produces an image like it.

It is the second act of a week that opened on Thursday with the traditional concert, the Mendelssohn evening told in our report on the song of praise in Oviedo, and it continues a glittering royal cultural autumn that also brought the night when, as our Planeta report described, Felipe and Letizia honoured Isabel Allende in Barcelona. By tonight, the badges handed over this morning will be worn into the Campoamor – but the welcome, as always in Oviedo, came first.
