A Song of Praise in Oviedo: Felipe, Letizia, Leonor and Sofia Open the Princess of Asturias Awards

Oviedo opened its biggest week in song on Thursday evening, October 22, as King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, with Princess Leonor, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofia, presided over the XXXIV Princess of Asturias Awards Concert at the Auditorio Palacio de Congresos Principe Felipe.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The Royal Household shared the night on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, and the lobby photograph is a family portrait to keep: Princess Leonor in black beside her father, the King at the centre in a dark double-breasted suit, Queen Letizia in a draped dark green top and black trousers, and Infanta Sofia in a tiered navy dress. The post passed 2,800 likes within hours among 1.44 million followers, while the family’s arrival reel raced past 9,400 likes.

A song of praise for the printing press

The programme honoured Felix Mendelssohn, and the work chosen was his Symphony No. 2, the Lobgesang, the Song of Praise written for the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg’s printing press. The Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias and the Choir of the Princess of Asturias Foundation performed selected movements under maestro Nuno Coelho, with sopranos Sylvia Schwartz and Pilar Alva-Martin and tenor Santiago Ballerini. Music celebrating the spread of knowledge, opening a week that honours knowledge in every field – the symbolism needed no explaining.

It continues a royal autumn of culture on this site: the King’s return to Poblet monastery, which our Poblet report described, and the Barcelona night when, as our Planeta report told it, Felipe and Letizia honoured Isabel Allende. After the concert in Oviedo, the four royals congratulated Coelho and the artists, then went outside to greet the neighbours who had waited in the street, thanking them for their warm welcome. In the arrival reel, Princess Leonor shakes an older lady’s hand as the crowd’s verdict appears on screen: an example for all young people. That is how awards week begins in Oviedo – with a hymn, and a handshake.

The King’s own week had already underlined the theme, when he chaired the Pro-RAE trustees at La Granja in defence of the Spanish language.
