Tokyo woke up on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to the photograph of the season: Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako seated side by side before a wall of gold, opening the GEA International Conference 2026 at the Tokyo Prince Hotel in Minato Ward, and dressed, both of them, in green. The Imperial Household Agency published the carousel the same day, a companion video followed, and within hours about 29,900 likes had gathered beneath the images on an account followed by some 2,502,740 people.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
Look closely at the lead image, because every detail in it is doing work. The couple sit behind a table draped in brocade and dressed with flower arrangements, the gold backdrop glowing behind them like a screen in a Kyoto temple. The Emperor wears a dark suit with a pale green tie. The Empress wears a light green suit with embroidered trim, a cream hat with a matching green band, and a pearl brooch at her lapel. At a conference devoted to green transformation, the imperial couple did not just attend the theme. They wore it.
The theme itself, in its full official form, is a statement of national intent: „Contributing to the Global Environment Through Growth Investment via GX (Green Transformation) – Strategic Promotion of Integrated Efforts Toward Realizing a Sustainable Future.“ GX is Japan’s flagship green transformation program, the government’s push to channel large-scale investment into decarbonization and green industry, and GEA 2026 is the international stage on which that ambition is presented to the world. An imperial opening lifts the occasion out of the conference circuit and into the story of the nation itself.
zeitblatt readers have followed this extraordinary imperial autumn step by step. Our report on the night the heir opened the Games showed Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko leading the Agency’s September recap at Aichi-Nagoya 2026. Our Shosoin story followed schoolchildren discovering Japan’s imperial treasure house in Nara. And the handshake that won a prefecture captured the Emperor and Empress melting hearts in Aomori. Thursday’s green opening now takes its place at the head of that album: the most policy-laden, and perhaps the most beautiful, appearance of the season.
What gives the morning its depth is the couple themselves. Emperor Naruhito is known around the world for his water-resources research and his environmental advocacy, scholarship he pursued for decades before ascending the Chrysanthemum Throne. Rivers, water, and the peoples who live by them form the great subject of his intellectual life. Empress Masako is a former diplomat educated at Harvard and Oxford, with a long-standing interest in environmental and water issues that stretches back to her years in international negotiation. When this pair sits down at an environmental conference, the world is not watching two figureheads perform a duty. It is watching two experts take their seats at a table they helped, in spirit, to build.
Tradition underpins the scene. GEA, Global Environment Action, conferences in Tokyo have a long tradition of imperial attendance at the opening, and that continuity is the court’s way of marking a subject as permanent. Fashions in policy come and go; an imperial habit, repeated across the years, tells ministries, markets, and foreign guests that the green transformation is not a passing campaign but a commitment woven into the identity of the state. The message lands precisely because it is never shouted.
And then there is the sheer pleasure of the picture. The brocade, the flowers, the soft matched greens against the gold: it is the rare conference photograph that belongs in a frame rather than a filing cabinet. October 15 gave Japan’s green future a face, or rather two faces, composed, coordinated, and unmistakably united. The Reiwa era has produced many memorable imperial images. This one, green before gold, may prove the most consequential of them all.

Genauer gesagt: zwei.
