King Felipe VI closed the Spanish royal couple’s two-day Mediterranean tour in Melilla on the afternoon of October 14 with the most quoted royal sentence of the season, telling representatives of Melillan society that they deserve to feel the embrace and the closeness of all Spaniards more often – not in spite of living here, but precisely because of it.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The encounter, shared by the Royal Household on its official Instagram account @casareal.es, was the final engagement of a remarkable day. In the morning, at the Palacio de la Asamblea, the King had received the Key to the City of Melilla, his second key in two days, and the couple had visited the CEIP Pintor Eduardo Morillas school. Readers can relive that sunlit start in our Melilla morning report with open arms and a sea of flags. The afternoon belonged to conversation – teachers, business figures, cultural voices and neighbours, gathered as representatives of the city’s society to speak with their King and Queen face to face.
The carousel’s lead photograph is a study in attention. In profile, the King wears a grey pinstripe suit and a blue patterned tie and holds a ceremonial baton, his expression grave and focused. Queen Letizia stands beside him in a pale pink blazer over her pale pink pleated blouse from the morning, her long hair smooth, small hoop earrings at her ears. Behind them, a backdrop bears the name of the Ciudad Autonoma de Melilla, flanked by a red heraldic banner with a gold coat of arms. No waving, no smiling for cameras – simply a King and Queen listening to their people.
Then came the speech. „These two intense days lead the Queen and me to an unequivocal conclusion,“ the King said: Melillans deserve to feel, more often and also through their King and Queen, the embrace and closeness of all Spaniards – not in spite of living here, but precisely because of it. The tour behind those words had begun with National Day in Madrid on October 12 and continued through Ceuta on October 13, where the couple received the first of their two city keys, as told in our Ceuta report with the tender moment and the first key.
The post travelled fast. Barely forty minutes after publication, the carousel already counted about 2,370 likes and 40 comments, on an account followed by some 1,437,837 people. Speeches at formal encounters rarely move that quickly online. This one did, because Felipe had turned a closing ceremony into a promise – that distance from the mainland earns Melilla more closeness, never less.
