Father, Daughter and a Final to Remember: Naruhito and Aiko Cheer the Soft Tennis Championships in Ariake

Forget the throne room – the best seat in Japan on Sunday was in a blue plastic arena chair in Ariake, and the Emperor was sitting in it, clapping like a fan. On Sunday, November 8, 2026, Emperor Naruhito watched the 81st Emperor’s Cup and Empress’s Cup All Japan Soft Tennis Championships at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo’s Koto ward, with his daughter Princess Aiko beaming beside him, the Imperial Household Agency announced on its official Instagram account @kunaicho_jp.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The photograph is a joy. Naruhito, grey at the temples, dark suit, blue striped tie, turns toward his daughter mid-applause with a smile he is not even trying to hide. Aiko, 24, in pale grey with navy trim and little pearl earrings, grins straight at the court and claps with both hands and her whole heart. More than 52,500 likes within hours, on an account with about 2.51 million followers – Japan saw that smile and loved it.

And what a week it capped. Culture Day medals on November 3, tea for the laureates at the palace on November 4, as readers saw in our report on the palace tea party, then the Louvre Renaissance show in Roppongi that same afternoon, retold in our story on the imperial museum visit – and now a sporting final on Sunday. Medals, tea, old masters, and soft tennis: that is a first family working every room in the country, and enjoying all of them.

Soft tennis is Japan’s own racket game, born there in the late nineteenth century, played with a soft rubber ball, light rackets and doubles teamwork, and played in schoolyards in every prefecture. Its national title, now 81 editions old, carries the Emperor’s Cup and the Empress’s Cup – so the man in the stands was quite literally watching his own trophy being fought for. Empress Masako was not listed among Sunday’s guests, which made the day a pure father-and-daughter outing, and Aiko – companion at the tea, companion at the Louvre – ended her week in the role the cameras love most: a fan, delighted, in a blue arena seat.

Klatschen wie die Fans: Kaiser Naruhito und Prinzessin Aiko beim Soft-Tennis-Finale in Ariake

Was fuer ein Sonntag in Tokio!
