She came to a school in Esch-sur-Alzette, sat down at a round table, and told 170 girls the story of her own life. On Wednesday, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg took part in a very special morning at the Ecole Privee Marie-Consolatrice – a round table called „CEO of my own life – Ces femmes qui tracent leur propre chemin“, women who chart their own path.

A school founded in 1888, teaching the future

The school has history. Founded in 1888, the Ecole Privee Marie-Consolatrice today shapes its teaching around one clear idea – developing an entrepreneurial spirit in its students. Initiative, independence, courage to start something of your own. Five other guests, each with a completely different life story, joined the Grand Duchess at the table, and each showed in her own way that women can take their destiny into their own hands.

Maria Teresa spoke openly. She shared her personal journey, her convictions and the decisive stages of her life with the 170 students present. And she showed how that story lives on today in her work – for women’s rights, against violence against women, for education, and against poverty and precarious living conditions. At the end, she said she hoped the conversations would be a source of inspiration for the young women in the room.

It was the second entrepreneurship story in two days for the Grand Ducal family. On Tuesday Grand Duke Guillaume celebrated ten years of the House of Entrepreneurship and its 23,000 supported ventures, and last week the Grand Ducal couple were honoured in Anvaing, the Belgian village where Grand Duchess Stephanie spent her childhood. Business one day, homecoming the next – and now a classroom full of girls being told, by Luxembourg’s Grand Duchess herself, to write their own story.

Maria Teresa, in a cream silk blouse tied at the waist over a dark dress, laughing mid-conversation, a small heart pendant at her neck, a hand raised as she makes a point. Not a posed portrait. Why this morning matters beyond Esch

Count it. One hundred and seventy students heard, first hand, that a life is not handed to you finished. It is built, decision by decision. A school that is 138 years old putting entrepreneurial spirit at the centre of its teaching is making the same point from the other side – that courage and initiative can be practised, like a language or an instrument. For the girls in Esch, Wednesday was not a royal visit to be watched. It was an invitation to start.

ESCH AN DER ALZETTE – Was fuer ein Vormittag! Die Grande-Duchesse Maria Teresa kam am Mittwoch in die Ecole Privee Marie-Consolatrice – und sprach mit 170 Schuelerinnen ganz offen ueber ihr Leben. Die Runde hatte einen Titel, den keine der jungen Frauen so schnell vergessen wird: „CEO of my own life – Ces femmes qui tracent leur propre chemin“ – Frauen, die ihren eigenen Weg gehen!

Die Schule wurde 1888 gegruendet – und setzt heute voll auf Unternehmergeist. Genau darum ging es auch am Tisch: Die Grande-Duchesse und fuenf weitere Gaeste mit voellig unterschiedlichen Lebenswegen zeigten jede auf ihre Art, dass Frauen ihr Schicksal selbst in die Hand nehmen koennen.

Maria Teresa erzaehlte ihren persoenlichen Weg, ihre Ueberzeugungen und die entscheidenden Stationen ihres Lebens. Und sie zeigte, wo diese Geschichte heute weiterlebt – in ihrem Einsatz fuer Frauenrechte, gegen Gewalt an Frauen, fuer Bildung und gegen Armut und prekäre Lebensverhaeltnisse. Zum Abschluss wuenschte sie sich, dass die Gespraeche eine Inspirationsquelle fuer die jungen Frauen sein moegen.
