She came back as a Grand Duchess to the village where she was once simply Stephanie. On Friday, Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stephanie of Luxembourg were received at the town hall of Anvaing, in the Belgian commune of Frasnes-lez-Anvaing, where a reception was given in their honour in the village where the Grand Duchess spent her childhood.

The Court’s report is unusually personal. In a warm and convivial atmosphere, it says, the day belonged to the many memories and the close bond that unite the Grand Duchess with Anvaing, a place that remains close to her heart to this day. The photograph backs every word: the couple beam beside the mayor, who wears the black, yellow and red sash of his office, with stained-glass coats of arms glowing behind them and dahlias lining the town hall table.
Stephanie, born Countess de Lannoy and raised at the Chateau d’Anvaing, married Guillaume in 2012 and is now mother of Princes Charles and Francois. Yet Friday was not about titles. It was about a village welcoming back one of its own, thirteen years after she left for a palace.
The visit also capped a busy royal week in Luxembourg, where the Grand Duke had taken centre court at the Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters the day before, and it sits comfortably alongside Europe’s other royal stories of the season, such as Queen Sofia presenting her music prize in Madrid. Small room, big feeling: Anvaing delivered the most human royal picture of the week.
There is a simple geography lesson inside the visit, too. Anvaing sits in the Walloon countryside of Hainaut, in the commune of Frasnes-lez-Anvaing, a landscape of villages, church towers and farmland near the Flemish border. It is the Luxembourg of Stephanie’s story turned inside out: not the Grand Duchy’s palace and ministries, but the small place that formed the woman who now shares its throne. Royal watchers spend the season moving between capitals, Madrid one day and Stockholm the next, yet the photograph everyone will keep from this week was taken in a village hall, in front of stained glass, with flowers from what could be a neighbour’s garden.
Was fuer ein Tag in Anvaing!
