Most birthday cakes at the palace are eaten in private. This one was cut in front of the cameras, at the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, by a Grand Duke with a very steady hand. On Tuesday, Grand Duke Guillaume attended the 10th anniversary celebrations of the House of Entrepreneurship, the Chamber initiative, supported by the Ministry of the Economy, that has guided Luxembourg’s founders for a full decade.

The numbers behind the party are the real story. In ten years, more than 23,000 initiatives across the most varied sectors have been supported by the House – roughly 2,300 a year in a country smaller than many capital cities. The ceremony looked back on that decade of accompaniment for entrepreneurs and project initiators, and forward too: the House intends to keep driving innovation and the creation of new companies, ready for the challenges of tomorrow. The Court notes that the Grand Duke’s presence underlines his engagement for entrepreneurship and a strong Luxembourg economy.
The official photo shows Guillaume, in a dark double-breasted suit, cutting into a red and white cake shaped as a bold number 10, four Chamber colleagues smiling beside him under the House of Entrepreneurship banner. It caps a busy royal week in Luxembourg: on Friday the Grand Ducal couple were honoured in Anvaing, Grand Duchess Stephanie’s Belgian childhood village, while this week also saw Luxembourg’s court in a wider world of honours, from a World Harmony leadership award presented in New York to Stephanie’s own descent into the slate chambers of Haut-Martelange. A court that cuts cakes for founders on Tuesday and wears hard hats on Monday is a court determined to be seen working.
Luxemburg – Was fuer ein Geburtstagsauftritt!
