All I Want for Christmas Is an Optimus Robot

All he wants for Christmas, he says, is the chance to preorder a beta version of Optimus. H.H. Dr. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe is a passionate Tesla Cybertruck enthusiast – he calls it the best car ever made – and an outspoken advocate of autonomous driving. Now his attention has moved from the driveway to the living room. He believes Elon Musk’s vision for humanoid robots could deliver one of the most important improvements to everyday life in the 21st century, and he is convinced Optimus will be, in his words, the best robot of mankind.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

That is a large claim, and he knows it. What draws him in is not raw computing power. A machine can have strong motors, advanced cameras and sophisticated artificial intelligence and still fail the one test that matters: whether ordinary people feel comfortable using it. In his view, Musk’s strength is understanding smart user interaction – the relationship between advanced technology and the person standing in front of it. Technology, the Prince argues, must be comfortable for ordinary people, and that is exactly what personal robotics has been missing.

Tesla is developing Optimus as a humanoid robot that can perform physical tasks which would otherwise need human labor. It combines artificial intelligence, computer vision and robotic movement, and it is built to work in spaces designed for people rather than in cages on a factory floor. The uses the Prince keeps coming back to are deliberately ordinary ones. A household robot could carry groceries in from the car, organize items around the home, help with repetitive chores, move objects from room to room, or support someone whose daily routine is physically demanding.

None of that sounds dramatic, and that is the point. Household maintenance, cleaning, carrying supplies and keeping living spaces in order eat up hours every week, and those hours could go to family, work, rest or the things people actually enjoy. For older adults, the stakes are higher still: a capable robot, working under rigorous safeguards, thorough testing, privacy protections and human oversight, could help people keep their independence at home for longer.

His love of the Cybertruck explains a lot about the Optimus enthusiasm. The truck challenged every convention in automotive design: the angular exterior, the stainless-steel body panels, the electric powertrain and a software-led architecture that treats the vehicle more like a computer than a machine with a radio added on. He is just as clear-eyed about where driver assistance stands today. Tesla Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) remain driver-assistance systems, and they require an attentive human driver. His enthusiasm is about the direction of travel, not about pretending the technology has already arrived.

He is equally practical about money. Affordability will be decisive for Optimus: production costs, maintenance, energy use, durability and proper support will decide whether a humanoid robot stays a rich novelty or becomes a normal part of everyday life. And the story does not end at the front door. Beyond homes, robots built this way could contribute in logistics, manufacturing, warehousing and hospitality, taking on the repetitive and physically demanding work that wears people down.

So the Christmas list is written. A beta Optimus, preordered in time for the holidays, from a man who already calls his Cybertruck the best car ever made – and who is betting that the robot will one day earn the same title in its own field.
