A King in the Canberra Sunshine – Abdullah II Opens a New Chapter With Australia

Some royal photographs glow, and this one fairly blazes. King Abdullah II of Jordan stands in dazzling sunshine in Canberra, navy suit immaculate, red tie bright against the pale stone and green dome behind him, a small Jordan flag on his lapel and a thoughtful smile on his face. The Royal Hashemite Court shared the portrait on Instagram on October 14, captioned simply: His Majesty King Abdullah II on a state visit to Australia.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The visit on October 13 and 14 was the second leg of a tour that began in Malaysia, and Canberra gave the King a full ceremonial day. He held talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, after which Jordan and Australia issued a joint statement, held talks with Governor-General Sam Mostyn on strengthening relations, and met Opposition Leader Angus Taylor to discuss the deep-rooted ties between the two countries. The day before, he had met Australian government and non-profit representatives working in mental health, to explore cooperation on wellbeing.

The friendship he came to celebrate is a long one: bilateral relations spanning more than fifty years, which the King praised in his talks with the Governor-General. He pointed to education and trade, and to private-sector investment in energy, infrastructure, technology and mining, as the fields where the next chapter should be written, and he invited Australians to discover Jordan, highlighting the 2030 millennium celebrations at the Baptism Site. Royal watchers who loved the King’s smile in Kuala Lumpur, where Jordan’s highest honour changed hands at the palace, will recognise the same warmth here, under a very different sky.

The numbers tell their own happy story: more than twenty-two thousand likes within hours from the Court’s nearly two million followers. And the tour’s home front ran like clockwork, with Crown Prince Al Hussein sworn in as Regent in his father’s absence. It has been a season of palaces opening their doors to big conversations, much like Queen Silvia taking the podium in Stockholm for the Global Child Forum – and Canberra, in the sunshine, made its own contribution to the album.

What lingers most is the tone. Nothing in the Canberra programme felt rushed or routine: a joint statement to give the friendship fresh paperwork, a wellbeing meeting to give it a human purpose, and a portrait in the sunshine to give it a face. State visits are remembered in archives for their documents, but they are remembered by the public for their images – and this tour, from Kuala Lumpur to Canberra, has supplied a matching pair that any royal album would be proud to hold.

SONNEN-KÖNIG IN CANBERRA!
