Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: A King’s Smile in Kuala Lumpur – Jordan’s Highest Honour Changes Hands at the Palace

Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: A King’s Smile in Kuala Lumpur – Jordan’s Highest Honour Changes Hands at the Palace

It is the smile that gives it away. King Abdullah II of Jordan stands in a chandelier-lit salon of Istana Negara, Malaysia’s national palace, laughing easily with Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, while the presentation cases of Jordan’s highest honour wait on the table beside them. The Royal Hashemite Court shared the photograph on Instagram on October 12, and the caption needed just one line: from His Majesty’s state visit to Malaysia.

The visit, on October 11 and 12, was King Abdullah II’s second state visit to Malaysia since May 2008, made at the invitation of Sultan Ibrahim himself. It marked more than sixty years of diplomatic relations between the two kingdoms, a friendship that began in 1965 and has quietly deepened ever since. The King landed in Kuala Lumpur late on October 11 and was received the next morning with a full state welcoming ceremony at the palace, followed by a private audience with his host.

Then came the moment royal watchers will remember. After their one-on-one meeting, King Abdullah II conferred on Sultan Ibrahim the Order of Al Hussein Ibn Ali, Jordan’s highest civilian honour, awarded only to kings, princes and heads of state. The ceremony at Dewan Seri Maharaja was the emotional peak of a programme that also included a state banquet and a scheduled audience with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi leading the Jordanian delegation.

The friendship has real substance behind the ceremony. Some 1,636 Malaysian students study in Jordan and more than 1,490 Jordanian students study in Malaysia, while bilateral trade climbed 15.2 percent in 2025 to RM993.4 million and grew another 8.0 percent in the first eight months of 2026. Two kingdoms, two continents, one very warm welcome – as readers saw when Luxembourg’s Grand Duke hosted the World Scout Foundation board at his palace, palaces are where the modern monarchy does some of its finest work.

What makes the photograph so striking is its ease. State visits are choreographed to the minute, yet nothing about the two kings looks choreographed: Abdullah mid-laugh, Ibrahim leaning in, both men clearly enjoying the conversation more than the ceremony around it. That ease is not an accident. It is what sixty years of accumulated goodwill looks like when it finally gets a picture. The Court’s followers responded instantly, sending the post to thousands of likes within hours, and the image now joins the visual record of a Hashemite season that has already taken the family from the United Nations in New York to birthday celebrations in Amman.

KÖNIGS-LÄCHELN IN KUALA LUMPUR!
