Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Queen Silvia’s Week of the Heart in Germany: Hospice Gift, Children’s Prize, and a Homecoming at Her Old School

It is the photograph everyone is talking about this week: Queen Silvia of Sweden, bending over a young girl in a wheelchair at the Regenbogenland Children’s and Youth Hospice in Düsseldorf, placing an orange gift box into her hands. No entourage, no speech, no ceremony. Just a Queen who arrived with presents and stayed to talk with the children about their lives. The picture captures, in a single frame, what Queen Silvia has stood for through five decades on the throne.

The hospice visit opened a four-stop week the 82-year-old monarch spent in Germany, her native country, and every stop told the same story. At a ceremony in Düsseldorf, the Queen received the Preis für Kindeswohl 2026, the Children’s Welfare Prize, honoring her many years of work for children’s safety and rights. The record behind the honor is remarkable: in 1994 she founded the Mentor Foundation together with the World Health Organization to keep young people away from drugs and substance abuse, and in 1999 she established the World Childhood Foundation. Few royals anywhere have worked as long, as consistently, or as personally for children.

The third stop marked a milestone she can fairly call her own: ten years of Mentor Germany, the German branch of the foundation, which has become an established voice in youth drug prevention with school programs and projects for healthier teenage years. The Queen has followed its work closely from the start, and the anniversary gave her the chance to thank educators and volunteers in person, with the quiet warmth she is known for.

The most personal moment of the week was saved for last. Queen Silvia inaugurated the new premises of the Luisen-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf, the school where she herself studied as a young woman, long before the world knew her name. Born Silvia Renate Sommerlath and raised between Germany and Brazil, she knows this city the way only a former schoolgirl can. To walk back into that building decades later as the Queen of Sweden and open its new rooms is the kind of full-circle moment few monarchs ever get, and those present said she was visibly moved.

Four stops, one Queen, one message: children first. No palaces, no tiaras, no military parades. Just a hospice, a prize, a prevention foundation, and a school. At an age when most people have long retired, Queen Silvia spent her week leaning toward the young and refusing to let the hardest problems be someone else’s job. Royals who work for children are common. Royals who make children the center of their entire public life are rare. This week in Germany, she reminded everyone which group she belongs to.

Kein Gefolge, keine Rede, keine Show.

Kein Palast, keine Krone, keine Parade.
