King Felipe VI presented the Forum Europa Prize 2026 to the Ibero-American General Secretariat, SEGIB, at the Royal Palace of El Pardo on Friday, honouring the institution that strengthens the Ibero-American Community, follows up its summits, builds dialogue between Europe and Latin America and forges alliances in a changing world – and he told the ceremony that Ibero-America is not a static or acquired identity: we must learn to be Ibero-Americans, and the more we advance in that learning, the more conscious we will be of everything we still do not know.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Royal Household, @casareal.es, showed the King in a dark suit and bright turquoise tie beside the prize’s great silver-framed certificate on blue velvet, flanked by the SEGIB recipients with their rolled diplomas – a woman in a cream trouser suit with a gold brooch at the centre of the group – beneath a gold Spanish coat of arms banner and the deep blue NEF banner of Nueva Economia Forum, the community’s flags in a row behind them on the red carpet. The honour follows a summit week in which the King closed the plenary and passed the baton to Honduras, told leaders in the citizens-first plenary where their duty lies, received UN chief Guterres at La Zarzuela and set the week’s theme in the mirror of Ibero-America speech at the Teatro Real.
The choice of laureate is the point. Presidents and kings collect the applause at summits; secretariats collect the work. SEGIB prepares each summit, chases each agreement and keeps 22 nations talking between editions, and the King had already called its help always invaluable when he closed the plenary and demanded that agreements take flight into tangible realities. Friday’s prize, presented by the King himself at El Pardo, the palace that hosted the summit’s thoughtful side ceremonies, turns that private gratitude into public honour. And his sentence gives the honour its philosophy: a community is not an identity you inherit, it is a lesson you keep learning – which is precisely why the people who keep the notes deserved, for once, to stand in the photograph holding the diplomas.
