King Haakon and Queen Sonja received Norway’s county governors to dinner at the Palace in Oslo on 3 November 2026, the Norwegian Royal House reported on its Instagram account @detnorskekongehus – a candlelit thank-you evening for the officials who make every royal visit in the country run smoothly.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The official photograph shows the King on his feet at the long dinner table, in white tie with sash, breast star and medals, speech card in hand, addressing the seated governors between tall silver candelabra and low arrangements of autumn roses. It is the Palace in its most classic register: warm light, formal dress, and a host who clearly means every word.
And the words were the story. „Thank you so much for the great effort you make when we come on visits,“ King Haakon said in his speech. „You help to create good memories for very many people. And we could not have managed without you.“ The county governors – the statsforvaltere – are the state’s highest representatives in their counties, the Court explains, with a special responsibility for ensuring that the framework and the content of a royal visit are looked after as well as possible.
The evening lands in a Palace autumn built around exactly this kind of gathering. Less than two weeks ago the King hosted the nation’s parliament at the same address, as our readers saw in the candlelight report on King Haakon’s Storting dinner at the Palace. First the elected representatives, now the regional ones: the Crown is quite deliberately seating the whole of Norway at its table this season.
Queen Sonja, who received the guests alongside the King, has carried her own share of the autumn programme, from the Palace to a Spanish schoolyard, where Queen Sonja visited the Norwegian School in Malaga and took roses from its pupils. Governors‘ dinner one week, schoolchildren the next – the pattern is a monarchy that thanks the people who hold the country together, at every level, in person.
The response online was immediate: more than 7,800 likes within hours for a photograph of a thank-you speech. Our verdict: this is the Norwegian monarchy at its most effective, not on a balcony but at a dinner table, telling the state’s regional representatives, in front of each other, that the Crown sees their work and values it. Gratitude, delivered formally and in white tie, lands differently. Everyone at that table will remember the evening – and so, the next time the King comes to their county, will everyone they tell about it.

Was fuer ein Abend in Oslo!
