Madrid heard a brand-new sound on Friday night, and the lady who made sure it was heard was the Queen whose name the prize carries. On October 16, Queen Sofia presided at the Teatro Monumental over the world premiere of Remanence by Luis Tabuenca Fernandez, winner of the 43rd Premio Reina Sofia de Composicion Musical, and presented the composer with his diploma in front of a full concert hall.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The Royal Household shared the arrival on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, and the lead photograph is pure warmth: the Queen coming through the theatre’s deep red doors, smiling broadly in a black diamond-pattern jacket, a single strand of pearls, a gold brooch and wide black trousers, a small black clutch in her hand. Within hours the post had drawn more than 4,700 likes and 75 comments from the account’s 1.44 million followers.
The figures explain why composers across Europe watch this prize so closely. Remanence was chosen from 78 submitted scores, and the award, convened by the Fundacio Ferrer de Musica and instituted in 1982, carries 100,000 euros, a sum described as making it the best-endowed composition prize in Europe. The jury, chaired by Vasco Mendonca, praised Tabuenca’s work for the clarity of its discourse, its gestural richness and its effective use of the orchestra. The RTVE Symphony Orchestra then did what the prize promises: it played the piece, under conductor Thomas Herzog, in a concert that shared the programme with Edvard Grieg. The score will also join the repertoire of Spain’s national youth orchestra, the JONDE, for its 2026-2027 tour.
Tabuenca, born in Zaragoza in 1979, is a composer and percussionist whose music explores the border country between contemporary composition, sound art and interdisciplinary performance – solo works, chamber music, stage pieces and sound installations heard at festivals in Europe and the United States. Remanence is built on timbre and resonance, on the sound that lingers after a note is struck, which made Friday’s premiere a fitting echo of the Spanish crown’s own cultural week: the King at Poblet monastery and at the Premio Planeta in Barcelona, stories we told in our report on King Felipe’s return to Poblet and our night-for-books report from Barcelona. Heritage on Thursday, literature on Thursday night, and on Friday the family’s matriarch in a Madrid concert hall, championing music that had never existed in public before. That is a cultural agenda any European court would be proud to copy.
