Four films. Four lives. One band that changed music for good. Sony Pictures is preparing The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event for April 2028, and the scale of the plan still sounds startling on paper. Instead of squeezing John, Paul, George and Ringo into a single biography, Sam Mendes will direct four separate theatrical features, one from each member’s point of view, and together they will tell the bigger story.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
That one-director choice gives the project its spine. Mendes can hold the period, the humour and the heartbreak in one consistent hand, while still letting each picture feel like the man at its centre. Sony and Columbia Pictures, working with Neal Street Productions, are financing and distributing worldwide. This is not a small tribute for devoted fans. It is a global cinema release, built to fill big screens in the same month.
The central casting is confirmed and it is clever. Harris Dickinson plays John Lennon. Paul Mescal plays Paul McCartney. Joseph Quinn plays George Harrison. Barry Keoghan plays Ringo Starr. Read those names together and you can already feel the contrast. Four performers with distinct screen rhythms should stop the films from blending into one long, polite history lesson. Each leading man has room to claim his chapter.
Trade reporting has filled in a wide circle around them, naming Anna Sawai, Saoirse Ronan, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Aimee Lou Wood, James Norton, Harry Lloyd, Adam Pally, Lucy Boynton, Farhan Akhtar, Morfydd Clark, Harry Lawtey and Ben Schwartz in supporting roles. That list points to the world beyond the stage doors: families, friends, partners, managers and the music business that grew up, fast and loud, around four young musicians from Liverpool.
The rights behind the cameras matter just as much. In its February 2024 announcement, Sony said Apple Corps, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison had granted full life story and music rights. Full music rights are the key phrase. The songs can sit inside the drama where they belong, written, argued over, recorded and performed, instead of hovering outside the story as decoration.
So how do you release four linked films? Producer Pippa Harris addressed that question at the BFI London Film Festival Industry Forum on October 12, 2026. She said the team wants audiences to experience the films in cinemas at the same time or during the same period, giving examples such as one film a week, or one across successive weekends in the same month. She also made clear that this does not necessarily mean watching all four in a single day.
Three days later, on October 15, 2026, The Hollywood Reporter reported bolder ideas from Sony and Mendes. Precision matters here, so here it is plainly. Those ideas are under discussion only, and none of them has been confirmed. The reported options include opening all four films on the same day, selling a four-film ticket package, reporting the box office collectively, and marketing the films with no prescribed viewing order. Sony declined to comment in that reporting, offering no comment on the boldest possibilities.
That silence should not be dressed up as a yes. It means the studio has not announced a final plan. Still, the discussion itself is revealing. A four-film ticket, if it ever happened, would turn a trip to the cinema into a short season pass. Collective box office reporting would present the project as one event in the charts rather than four rivals. And no set viewing order would let each fan start with the Beatle they love most, then build a personal route through the story. Intriguing? Absolutely. Decided? Not yet.
Harris and her examples point toward a shared season in cinemas, with time between chapters for audiences to talk, compare and go back for more. That rhythm suits this material. Watch Lennon’s version, sit with it for a week, argue with a friend who saw it differently, then return for McCartney’s account of the same years. Harrison and Starr, so often reduced to colour in single-film tellings, get the space their stories deserve.
The structure also solves a familiar problem with band biographies. One film about four people usually becomes one person’s story with three supporting parts. Four films refuse that shortcut. The overlaps will matter, and so will the contradictions, the small moments each man remembers in his own way. Newcomers who know the choruses but not the chapters get four doors into the story instead of one long lecture. Long-time fans get something rarer: permission to see the band whole, without picking a single winner.
April 2028 is not close, and nobody should pretend the release plan is settled. What is settled is strong enough. One director across four films. Four distinct perspectives. Full life story and music rights. A major studio thinking hard, in public and in private, about how cinema can stage an event that streaming cannot copy. If the finished films match the ambition, Mendes and Sony will not just have made a Beatles event. They will have given 2028 its defining night, or rather its defining four nights, at the movies.
