A First for Japan – Emperor Naruhito and the Akishino Couple Open the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya

A first in Japanese sporting history got the front row it deserved on Sunday, October 18, 2026, when Emperor Naruhito travelled to Aichi Prefecture to attend the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games. Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko also attended the opening ceremony, and the Imperial Household Agency shared the imperial party with its 2.5 million Instagram followers on @kunaicho_jp the same day, in a post that raced to about 17,000 likes.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The photograph tells the story at a glance. Emperor Naruhito stands front and centre in a dark suit and a pale lilac tie, smiling gently as he takes in the arena. Beside him stands Crown Prince Akishino, a head taller, in a dark suit and striped tie, and beside the Crown Prince, Crown Princess Kiko, serene in a cream outfit with a pearl necklace and a gold brooch. Games officials in purple lanyards fill out the row. It is a picture of three royals doing the simplest and most powerful thing royals can do for a cause: being there, together, in the front row.

And what a cause it is. The Asian Para Games are being held in Japan for the first time in their history. Athletes from 45 countries and regions of Asia have gathered in Aichi and Nagoya, and they will compete across 18 sports. A first home edition is a milestone for Japanese para sport, the moment the continent’s greatest celebration of Paralympic athletes finally takes place on Japanese soil, in front of Japanese crowds, with the Emperor himself in attendance on opening day.

Aichi, remarkably, has done all of this before, and only a month ago. In September the same host region staged the Asian Games, where zeitblatt readers followed the night the heir opened the Games, as Akishino and Kiko led the imperial presence at an opening that drew the same 45 countries and regions across 43 sports. One prefecture, two continental Games in a single autumn, and the imperial family in the front row at both: as a feat of hosting, it is close to unique in modern sport.

The imperial autumn around this opening has been relentless in the best way. Days ago, the household was lifting seals and inspecting treasures in Nara, where six rooms woke up as the imperial seal was lifted at the Shosoin. Before that, Tokyo saw the imperial couple lend their presence to the green growth agenda, when Naruhito and Masako opened the GEA International Conference 2026 in green before gold. Treasure, environment, and now para sport: the household’s October has been a tour of everything Japan wants to say about itself.

What does an imperial front row actually do for a Games? It converts attention. Millions follow the Agency’s account precisely for moments like this, and every one of those followers now knows that the Para Games have opened in Aichi, that 45 nations are competing, and that the Emperor considers the occasion worth a journey. For para athletes, whose excellence has not always commanded the biggest stages, that conversion of attention into respect is the whole point. The Games are open, Japan is hosting them for the first time, and the front row has spoken.
