The XXX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government is officially under way in Madrid, opened on Wednesday, November 4, with a formal inauguration presided over by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Teatro Real and a dinner offered by the King and Queen at the Royal Palace.

The Royal Household, @casareal.es, introduced the evening with a classic host portrait. The King wears a dark suit with a dotted purple tie and a small flag pin, and the Queen stands beside him in a long navy off-the-shoulder dress with a sculpted sleeve, clutch in hand, before the summit’s white backdrop with its bold red arc. On Thursday the leaders of the Ibero-American Community move to the Gallery of the Royal Collections for the plenary session, the stage this paper admired when the Gallery of the Royal Collections stood ready for the summit, while the Queen works at the Royal Palace of El Pardo on two of her signature themes, the fight against human trafficking and the inclusion of people with disabilities, the cause the King advanced when one card for 90 million people was presented on Wednesday morning.

The opening crowns a week the King has spent assembling piece by piece: a poet’s exhibition with a neighbouring president, as told when five hundred years of Camoes brought Felipe VI and Portugal’s president to the National Library, and a morning of honours when Felipe VI honoured Gutierrez and Esteves with the Iglesias Prize. Dreissig Gipfel hat die iberoamerikanische Gemeinschaft nun gefeiert – aus einer diplomatischen Idee ist eine Familien-Gewohnheit geworden. Und wer koennte eine Familie besser empfangen als ein Koenigspaar in Bestform? Madrid hat seinen Gipfel. Und der Gipfel hat seine Gastgeber!

There is a quiet choreography to evenings like this, and the Spanish court performs it better than almost any in Europe. The opera house supplies the grandeur, the palace supplies the intimacy of a dinner, and the sovereigns themselves supply the continuity that elected leaders, arriving and departing with each cycle, cannot.
