The King and the Dictionary: Felipe Chairs the Pro-RAE Trustees at La Granja

The King and the Dictionary: Felipe Chairs the Pro-RAE Trustees at La Granja

A king, a tapestry and the biggest dictionary in the Spanish language: on Wednesday morning, October 21, King Felipe VI chaired the annual meeting of the Patronato of the Fundacion Pro-RAE at the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso in Segovia, the foundation that channels society’s support to the Real Academia Espanola.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The Royal Household shared the meeting on its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, and the lead photograph is a beauty: the King at the centre of the table in a dark pinstripe suit and a floral tie in red and violet, a slim microphone before him, a historic tapestry in gold and rust filling the wall behind him, and in the foreground a white row of volumes – the Diccionario Historico de la Lengua Espanola, its teal display copy showing the letters DHLE. The post passed 2,700 likes within hours among the account’s 1.44 million followers.

Two years reviewed, one language to serve

The work on the agenda was concrete. The trustees reviewed the balance of 2025 and 2026 and were presented with the strategic projects for the coming year. Around the King sat the full cast of the Patronato: institutional representatives, regional presidents, executives from Spain’s leading companies and personalities from the academic world. The foundation’s idea is simple and powerful – a national language is a shared treasure, so its academy should be backed by the whole of society, and its patrons should include the people who run the regions, the boardrooms and the universities.

The setting underlines the rank of the work. La Granja de San Ildefonso, the great summer palace near Segovia, lends its tapestry rooms to very few ordinary meetings, and a trustees‘ session chaired there by the King himself reads as a state occasion. It also fits the pattern of an extraordinary royal autumn: the King’s return to Poblet monastery, which our Poblet report described, and the Barcelona night when, as our Planeta report told it, he and Queen Letizia honoured Isabel Allende with the world’s richest book prize. Monastery, novel, and now the dictionary – the Spanish crown keeps showing up wherever the country’s culture is being built.

Spanish, after all, is spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Spain, Latin America and far beyond, and a living language needs exactly the patient work the academy does: recording words, tracing their history, weighing new usages. On Wednesday that work sat in a white row of volumes directly in front of the King. No throne, no crown – just a head of state, a tapestry, and the dictionary of his language, in a palace in Segovia.
