St Peter’s Square has seen a thousand Wednesday mornings, but this one came with a picture the whole internet wanted to keep. Pope Leo XIV, smiling in his white cassock, waves from the white popemobile while a joyful crowd of families, parents and children reaches up toward him, phones in the air, the great Apostolic Palace standing behind them in the Roman sun. On 21 October the official @pontifex account shared that photograph with a message about marriage and family, and within hours more than 27,600 people had liked it.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The message itself is one perfect sentence, quoted from Gaudium et spes, paragraph 47, the pastoral constitution of the Second Vatican Council: „The well-being of the individual and of human and Christian society is intimately linked with the healthy condition of that community produced by marriage and family.“ The @pontifex team published it in seven languages at once – English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, German and Polish – for the account’s 14.5 million followers, tagged #GeneralAudience in Vatican City. Some 240 comments arrived alongside the likes, most of them from families who plainly felt the sentence was addressed to them personally.
It is worth understanding why this Pope keeps returning to the household. For Leo XIV, the family is not a theme among themes. It is the first community, the place where a society is actually made – where children learn language and patience, where forgiveness is practised daily, and where care for another person stops being an idea and becomes a routine. A council text from December 1965 might sound distant, but placed beside a photograph of real parents lifting real children toward a waving Pope, paragraph 47 reads like it was written for this morning’s feed. The well-being of a whole society, the sentence insists, can be read in the health of its homes.
The crowd in the photograph makes the argument all by itself. Nobody is posing. A woman in an orange jacket films with both hands raised. A father steadies a child. The driver concentrates, the security officer scans, and in the middle of the happy noise the Pope waves with the calm of a man greeting neighbours. That is the atmosphere his @pontifex account has built all year, the same warmth our readers enjoy in lighter Vatican-adjacent moments such as A Chorus Line: The Next Generation Shines at Macy’s Parade – celebration, family and an audience that spans generations. On Wednesday, the celebration carried a sentence with real weight, and the world leaned in to read it.
Was fuer ein Mittwoch in Rom!
Dort lernt man Teilen, Warten, Verzeihen. So einfach, so wahr!
