It is not every Monday that a Grand Duchess trades the palace for a pit helmet. Grand Duchess Stephanie of Luxembourg visited the Musee de l’Ardoise, the Slate Museum at Haut-Martelange, and followed its Johanna visitor route across the former extraction site that today preserves more than 200 years of Luxembourg slate history.

The Court’s report reads like a small adventure. The slate industry, it explains, was a major activity of the Greater Region and, alongside steel, enjoyed its heyday at the beginning of the 20th century. On the Johanna route, an immersive presentation shows visitors the extraction methods and the daily lives of the miners, whose working conditions were particularly difficult. The star of the route waits 42 metres underground: the vast, impressive former extraction chambers themselves.
Above ground again, the Grand Duchess saw the splitters‘ workshop, where blocks of slate were divided into roofing sheets by hand, and an exhibition at the Villa Rother devoted to the miners‘ everyday lives. The official photograph shows her in a grey museum hard hat, bent over a glass case of rock specimens and beaming at the explanation – a royal visit with its sleeves rolled up.
It has been a week of striking royal registers in Luxembourg: on Friday, the Grand Ducal couple were honoured in Anvaing, the Grand Duchess’s Belgian childhood village, and elsewhere in Europe the museum mood continued as Queen Silvia spent a museum morning with ceramics and young design in Stockholm. Stephanie’s contribution to the season is the most hands-on of all: heritage you have to climb down into. It also underlines how deliberately this young court is mapping the whole country, parish by parish and museum by museum, in the first full autumn of the new reign.
Haut-Martelange – Was fuer ein Auftritt!
