Crown Prince Christian Takes Copenhagen: A Prince, a Pop Star and Two Disposable Cameras

Copenhagen has a new favourite photograph, and it was taken with a camera that costs less than a harbour lunch. Crown Prince Christian, two days after his celebrated 21st birthday, spent Saturday touring his own capital with Danish rap star Benjamin Hav, the pair of them carrying what the Crown Prince cheerfully called „a couple of disposable cameras“, and the Royal House published the results to an delighted audience of more than 19,000 likes within hours.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The caption is the Crown Prince’s own, signed by him on the Royal House account, and it deserves to be quoted in full for its charm: „I have been on a trip around Copenhagen with Benjamin Hav and a couple of disposable cameras. We got far and wide, and talked about everything from birds to future dreams.“ The photographs are credited to Christian and Benjamin Hav together, which means the heir to the Danish throne spent his Saturday as both reporter and subject, developing a story nobody else could have taken.

A harbour selfie and a bridge like a fleet

The collage the court released looks like prints spread on a table, still warm from the lab. In the top frame the two men grin into the lens at the water’s edge, Christian in a brown zip jacket over a white t-shirt, Benjamin Hav beside him in blue, and behind them the Langelinie promenade curves away with its crowds and the rocks of the Little Mermaid catching the sun. Below it sits their second trophy: the Circle Bridge in Christianshavn, photographed from a boat, its five masts and ring-topped rigging drawn against an October sky while a tour boat slides beneath. The bridge, designed by the artist Olafur Eliasson and opened in 2015, links Christiansbro with Applebys Plads across the Christianshavn Canal, and in the prince’s film frame it looks like a small fleet that decided to become architecture.

Context is what makes the outing sing. On Thursday Christian turned 21, and the court marked it with formal portraits at Amalienborg: scarlet Royal Life Guards gala uniform worn for the first time, the light blue sash of the Order of the Elephant, and the Grand Commander Cross of the Dannebrog newly awarded by his father, King Frederik X. Those are the images that will hang in public buildings for a generation. Saturday’s film frames are their joyful opposite, the same young man in a zip jacket asking a pop star about birds, and Denmark is plainly in love with both versions. It is the same warmth that carried a Grand Duchess home to her childhood village and a prince’s twenty years for the planet in Monte Carlo this week: ceremony one day, candour the next.

Why a disposable camera is a small revolution

Film cannot be filtered, reviewed or deleted, and that is precisely its honesty. The grain in these photographs, the hard sunlight, the slightly crooked framing, all of it would have been edited away by a phone, and all of it is why the pictures feel true. For a prince whose life will be choreographed to the minute, choosing a camera with no screen is a small declaration of freedom, and choosing Benjamin Hav as the day’s companion is another. Hav, who performs with his band Benjamin Hav & Familien and won the GAFFA Prize for Live Name of the Year in 2023, is one of the warmest live acts in Denmark, a performer whose shows feel like family parties. That he and the Crown Prince can wander the harbour like this, cameras in hand, flatters both the monarchy and the music scene at once.

Christian, born on 15 October 2005, is the eldest child of King Frederik X and Queen Mary and the next in line to the Danish throne. At 21 he is building the serious working life of an heir, with military service and public duties filling his calendar. This week he simply showed the country the person inside the programme, and the country answered with the fastest likes of his birthday season. If more film rolls from that harbour day are still waiting in a camera bag, Denmark will be first in line at the lab.
