Doing “That Thing”: Brazilian Rockers Banda AL9 Celebrate 30 Years of the Ultimate Pop-Film Anthem

Thirty years after That Thing You Do! first introduced the world to the infectious, tambourine-shaking energy of fictional ’60s sensations The Wonders, the timeless title track is getting a fresh lease on life. Brazilian rock ’n’ roll outfit Banda AL9 are stepping up to the plate, delivering a brand-new cover of the iconic pop-film anthem, arriving digitally on October 30 via Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records.

For brothers Matheus and Thiago Khouri—the creative core behind Banda AL9—the cover is far more than a cynical anniversary cash-in. The song has been a fixture of their musical lives since they were teenagers, played countless times to crowds who have clamored for an official release for years.

“That Thing You Do! has been part of our lives since we were teenagers,” the band shares. “We’ve always loved this song… The song has been loved by generations, and we feel very honored to help keep it alive today and share it with a new generation of listeners.”

Maintaining the joyful, unbridled spirit and tight vocal harmonies of the original while stamping it with their own youthful power-pop drive, Banda AL9 prove that a great hook knows no borders—leaping effortlessly from a fictional 1964 Hollywood stage to a contemporary Brazilian rock band in 2026.

Riding High on Hey! Hey! We’re Banda AL9

The single drops hot on the heels of the band’s latest album, Hey! Hey! We’re Banda AL9, which marks their first-ever vinyl release through Wicked Cool Records. The record has been turning heads across the indie-rock landscape, boasting tracks penned by heavy-hitters like Steven Van Zandt (“Indigo Skye”) alongside Kurt Baker and Wyatt Funderburk (“She Can Do It All”).

Critics have been quick to champion the band’s sun-drenched, guitar-driven ethos: Rock at Night hailed the record as “the ultimate power-pop summer soundtrack,” while CD HotList called it “the best driving-with-the-roof-down album I’ve heard in five years.” Meanwhile, Faster and Louder championed their infectious vitality: “Trends in music come and go, but melody, harmonies, and catchy choruses are eternal. World, meet Banda AL9!”
