On 11 July, Pope Leo XIV did something deceptively simple at the Borgo Laudato Si‘ in Castel Gandolfo. He had lunch. About 200 people in vulnerable situations sat at the tables with him, in a gathering promoted by the Diocese of Rome and charity associations, and the Pope arrived, remarkably, without a prepared speech. What he said instead has travelled around the world. „I came hungry for justice, hungry for authentic charity, hungry for a Church that truly knows how to open its doors, welcome and receive everyone.“ The reel on @pontifex has drawn 60,009 likes and 1,164 comments, and the photograph shows the Pope outdoors at a set table, smiling at a seated guest like a host who is exactly where he wants to be.

The menu deserves its own paragraph, because nobody serves pasta all’amatriciana by accident. There was an Italian mixed starter with fried vegetables, the amatriciana, roast veal with chicory and roast potatoes, and strawberries with ice cream to finish. That is feast-day cooking, offered to guests who are usually offered leftovers, and the difference is the entire story. Dignity, at this lunch, was not a slogan. It was a hot main course and a proper dessert. Readers met the same instinct in our coverage of the Pope’s prayer for water as a gift: in Leo XIV’s world, gifts are things you can hold, pour and, in this case, eat.
And then there is the missing speech. A pope without notes, listening at a lunch table, is a genuinely striking image in an age of scripted everything, and it explains the warmth of the response, the same warmth readers saw in his birthday greeting in the Vatican Library. He came hungry, he said, and the hunger he described was not for lunch. It was for justice, for authentic charity, and for a Church of open doors. Two hundred guests heard it first. Sixty thousand likes later, the whole internet had pulled up a chair.
Was fuer ein Mittagessen!
