Middle-earth returns to cinemas on December 17, 2027 with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, from Warner Bros. and New Line. First-look photographs this summer showed the Shire in green and gold, more than a decade after The Hobbit trilogy closed.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace reprises Thranduil. Principal photography began this past July in New Zealand, with director Andy Serkis starting work in the motion-capture volume in Wellington.

Serkis Directs His Defining Role

Serkis both directs and plays Gollum, the role he pioneered in performance capture a quarter-century ago before directing films including Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Peter Jackson, who is producing, told IndieWire at Cannes that he wanted the story told from an internal Gollum perspective – and that this was Serkis’s territory.

New Faces and a Story from the Appendices

Jamie Dornan plays a younger Strider, the Aragorn role made famous by Viggo Mortensen, with Serkis telling Variety from the set that Dornan is doing extremely well. Kate Winslet joins as Marigol, a matriarch of the Stoors, Anya Taylor-Joy plays an elf of the Woodland Realm, and Leo Woodall plays Halvard, a Dunedain ranger created for the film.

The story is drawn from Tolkien’s appendices and sits between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf sends Aragorn to track Gollum before Sauron’s servants can learn the Ring’s whereabouts from him. The scripts come from Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Jackson also told IndieWire that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker was a creative reference for the psychology-first approach, while Serkis has said the production will mix miniatures and prosthetics with modern tools and only light machine-learning touches for de-aging.

GOLLUM IST ZURUECK! Mittelerde feiert Heimkehr ins Kino – mit McKellen, Wood und Serkis

Die Reise geht weiter! Am 17. Dezember 2027 kehrt Mittelerde auf die grosse Leinwand zurueck: The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum von Warner Bros. und New Line.
