A brand-new official photograph from Japan has captured something you almost never see: a reigning emperor and empress behaving exactly like the most devoted sports fans in the stadium. Seated side by side in the stands behind a bright blue „2026 AOMORI“ banner, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako clap along with the crowd on the second day of their visit to Aomori Prefecture, and the joy on their faces is impossible to miss.
The image was released by the Imperial Household Agency on its official Instagram account @kunaicho_jp on the evening of Sunday, October 11, 2026. It shows the Emperor in a light cream suit and the Empress in a pale yellow jacket with a green patterned scarf, both leaning slightly forward with their eyes fixed on the action below, applauding with genuine enthusiasm. The officials seated beside them can hardly match the imperial couple’s energy.
The occasion is the 80th National Sports Festival, the Kokumin Sports Taikai, Japan’s great inter-prefectural multi-sport championship. Held every year since 1946, in Showa 21, the festival was created to spread sports across the country, improve the nation’s fitness, and develop local sports and culture in the host region. For Aomori, this edition is a true homecoming: the northern prefecture had not hosted the festival in 49 years.
Sunday marked day two of the Emperor and Empress’s visit to Aomori, during which they also took time to view conditions across the prefecture and meet the people working behind the scenes of the games. Their first day had already delighted royal watchers, as reported here on zeitblatt.com, but the new photograph from the stands takes the story to another level.
There is a reason this image is winning hearts across Japan. Athletes say that nothing lifts a performance like knowing the imperial couple is watching, and Naruhito and Masako are no distant observers here. They clap, they lean in, they follow every move like lifelong supporters of the teams on the field. In that moment, protocol steps aside and pure fandom takes over.
Empress Masako’s look deserves its own applause. The pale yellow jacket glows against the stadium blue, and the green patterned scarf adds a fresh, graceful accent that suits the festive mood perfectly. It is sporty elegance at its most charming, proof that the Empress understands the language of the stands as well as the language of state ceremony.
The imperial couple’s love of sport is no secret to longtime royal watchers. Only recently, Naruhito and Masako celebrated the Asian Games in Aichi with the same visible delight, proving that whether the stage is an international arena or a prefectural stadium, their enthusiasm never wavers.
As the 80th National Sports Festival continues in Aomori, one thing is certain: the athletes competing this week can count on two very special fans in the stands. Long may they clap.
Denn hier sieht man keine steifen Protokoll-Gäste.
Nationalen Sportfestival in Aomori.
