Premiere „FireWorks. Celebrating 40 Years of Theaterhaus Stuttgart“

For Gauthier Dance, April is the proudest month: 40 years of Theaterhaus Stuttgart! Eric Gauthier and his dancers will be celebrating in advance at the big birthday gala for the beloved Stuttgart venue on March 29, 2025, with the main act to follow: the premiere of FireWorks on April 30, 2025 – a worthy gift, as the programme features 10 world premieres as part of The FireWorks Project and a total of 12 participating choreographers!

And of course, rehearsals for the new production are well underway. Stijn Celis was creating in Stuttgart until the end of last week, while artist in residence Barak Marshall and Sofia Nappi will be choreographing in the Löwentor studio from mid-February. At the beginning of April, it will be Benjamin Millepied’s turn, before Andonis Foniadakis takes over right through to the premiere – after all, the Greek choreographer is not only contributing a piece to The FireWorks Project, but also an extended version of his Bolero for the second part of the evening.

40 years of Theaterhaus Stuttgart – what a milestone birthday! It goes without saying that the two dance companies of Theaterhaus Stuttgart also send extra sparkling congratulations. Inspired by the great tradition of Theaterhaus as a concert venue, The Fireworks Project fires ten colourful dance rockets in the first part of the evening. The new creations are all based on compositions that represent the artistic identity of Theaterhaus with its illustrious jazz tradition. They will be transformed into dance pieces by star choreographers Mauro Bigonzetti, Virginie Brunelle, Stijn Celis, Dominique Dumais, Andonis Foniadakis, Marco Goecke, Benjamin Millepied and Sofia Nappi. After this veritable firework display of world premieres and in keeping with the anniversary, the second part after the interval consists of a grateful walk down memory lane, reviving significant works of the Gauthier Dance repertoire such as Marco Goecke’s moving solo Infant Spirit from the Grandes Dames programme as well as Hans van Manen’s fast-paced classic Solo for three (!) dancers from the second Gauthier Dance bill High Five from 2008. But of course Eric Gauthier has nevertheless included a twist or two. Andonis Foniadakis will expand his Bolero for a cast of 14 dancers, with all the JUNIORS and eight members of the main company. And Lickety-Split, originally one of the Lucky Seven pieces from 2011, will now be danced by the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS in the brand new Dream Team version, which premiered on January 23. 2025.

One year after the sensational success of their debut production RENAISSANCE, the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS followed up with a second programme of their own, consisting of two world premieres, two tried-and-tested classics of contemporary dance and a brand-new podcast format hosted by Eric Gauthier. What makes the new dance evening extra special: All six JUNIORS are on stage in all four pieces. The programme was therefore not only be a real challenge in terms of stamina. Above all, the young dancers had to work together perfectly. Just like, guess what, a Dream Team!
