Palm Springs New Generation at The Living Desert Zoo: Help Name the Youngest Patas Monkey
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens invites the public to name the newest member of its lively patas monkey family.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
At The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert, a bright spark of life has captured the hearts of guests and caretakers. Born on May 3, 2025, the zoo’s newest patas monkey is already charming visitors with her playful energy and fearless spirit. As the youngest member of a three-generation female troop, she represents both continuity and discovery, and the zoo is inviting the community to help choose her name.
The Fastest Primates in the World
Caretakers describe her as endlessly curious and full of personality, leaping up the rocks of her habitat and chasing after her elders under the watchful eyes of her mother and grandmother. Patas monkeys are the fastest primates in the world, capable of bursts of up to 35 miles per hour, native to the grasslands and semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa.
Four Swahili Names, One Winner
Visitors and supporters can vote for their favorite of four Swahili names by making a donation to The Living Desert. Each vote, starting at a minimum donation of two dollars, supports the zoo’s veterinary care, educational programming, and more than one hundred active conservation projects around the globe. Voting remains open through November 11, and the winning name will be the one that receives the most donations.
Kukua means „to grow“ in Swahili, reflecting transformation and resilience. Upepo, meaning „wind,“ honors the speed and energy of the patas monkey. Asili translates to „nature,“ embodying the interconnectedness of all living things. Maisha, meaning „life,“ conveys joy, vitality, and endurance.
The Living Desert, at 47900 Portola Avenue in Palm Desert, remains a cornerstone of conservation education in California. When the winning name is announced, it will stand as a symbol of community, curiosity, and the enduring relationship between people and the natural world.
